USB adapter for aftermarket HU

Hello all, I recently bought an aftermarket HU for my 14 BRZ. A Sony XAV-AX5000 with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The install was perfectly fine however an adapter is needed to retain the use of the OEM USB slot. There were two that said fit my car, one was a METRA AX-TOYUSB, the other was a Spiral audio UX-0007. In not sure why this is so difficult, has anyone had a similar problem when installing an aftermarket unit and can help me find the correct one I need? Thanks!

Hey thanks man. Two people on the amazon reviews said it doesn’t fit though? Any idea why?

Crutchfield shipped the same incorrect METRA AX-TOYUSB one for my 2016 BRZ when I ordered an aftermarket head unit from them. That one is seems to be only for Toyota 86/FRS's.

For a BRZ USB port, you need Metra AX-SUBUSB2 for 2016 - up. For 2012 to 2015, it should be the Metra AX-SUBUSB, but you might want to take a look in your dash to confirm that your connector is the older one.

Wow so many varying connectors. I ordered one from amazon that a previous ostensibly suggested. If that doesn’t work I’ll return it and order the one you shared. Thanks!

My Canadian 2017 BRZ actually needed the toyota USB connector, not the subaru one. PAC USB-TY1 was the part number I needed.

We should be able to tell you for sure if you can take a picture of your connector end, as the subaru and toyota ones look quite different.

Edit: METRA AX-TOYUSB is the same thing as the PAC USB-TY1 by the way.

Thanks so much, sorry for the late response, busy few days. Here is a picture of the adapter, hopefully it helps. Thanks again.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't that the GPS connector? I remember the USB being gray and having symmetrical notches rather than the offset notches, not to mention it needs to connect 4 wires to the radio rather than a single shielded cable like the GPS has

Wait what!? This is so embarrassing, but at least I know why t wasn’t working. Hmm I don’t see any thing else in their with four notches however.

Edit: I am so embarrassed. Thanks for clearing that up. I found the right connector and now my car play works perfectly! Thanks so much and for the record the one that fit my car was the spiral audio UX-0007, which is good because they were giving me a hard time about refunding lol. Thanks again!

Sorry for the late reply. That may have been the problem though, I didn't use a manual to install, I have some knowledge of radio installation from my first car, an 04 accord.

Yeah, these cars have a few more connectors than an 04 accord!
