Brake compound for Track Days
Hi guys, can you recommend me a good compound for track days?
I'm currently using Ferodo DS-UNO on my AP Racing Sprint Kit, but they are not holding the abuse very well ( 3 pads have cracked edges) Context: ptuning turbo kit ~ 300whp , Tein mono sport coilovers, 255/40-17 Pirelli Trofeo semi slick (60 treadwear) Thanks!https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...ce90e351de.jpg Enviado desde mi Nexus 5X mediante Tapatalk |
Cracked edges are a result of overheating + lack of chamfering. It is normal for what you are doing to the pad.

Yep. Need to add cooling. I've run the Ferodo DS1.11 pad based on the recommendation of Jeff Ritter at Essex Parts Service after I shared with him what I was looking for. I LOVED them. Great pedal feel and they lasted a long time. My pedal stayed consistent from beginning to end of the session. I have Hawk DTC60 on now (I stole them from a buddy) and much prefer the pedal feel of the DS1.11. DS1.11 will be back on the car. They both stop the car. The pedal feel of the DS1.11 is superior, IMO. The same buddy put the DS1.11 on his Camaro 1LE and also loves them. The DSUNO has a very flat curve, like the 1.11. I'd expect those pads are also excellent. I'm at a track every month and opted for their "Endurance" offering for longevity - hence the DS1.11.

Thank you guys for your suggestions.
I have brake ducts. To be clear the pads performed very good , I made 5 track days on them , never had any fade. I switch between track pads and carbotech 1521 for daily drive. I would like to try another track-only compound maybe carbotechs xp20 , winmax w6 , what do you think is a good alternative to Ferodo dsuno? Enviado desde mi Nexus 5X mediante Tapatalk |
More experienced people can chime in but Im pretty sure that not all pads can mixed between DD and track that easily, most would at last required proper bedding when swapping (which actually means spending the first session bedding brakes instead of actually driving). Most pads within the same manufacturer can be used (Hawks with Hawks, or Carbotech with Carbotechs and such) but I dont know if you could swap between a Winmax and a Carbotech for example and not have bad transfer layers, which could damage the pad, the disc or both. This is just a suggestion based on what I have read, I run race pads on the streets, because I already haul enough shit to the track to have to worry about swapping pads as well.

I use DS1.11 for track and DS2500 for street with the AP Racint Sprint kit...only 180whp but they perform excellent!!

Pad looks ok, I wouldn't worry about the missing corner.

I believe the usual recommendation is to start with the same compound, at least with the AP Sprint. C |

My preference is a pad that has consistent pedal feel and my need is a pad that lasts forever. When I first got the kit, I asked Jeff for something like the PFC97 pad (an endurance pad). He pointed me to the DS1.11. I'm happy. If I could get the PFC97 compound in this pad shape, I'd buy it. |
Thanks for the support guys. The pads with the missing corner are fine. We see that type of thing on many different brands among customers. A little chunking or crumbling on the edges is no bid deal, and we wouldn't anticipate any problems with running them.
As noted, we typically recommend starting with the same pad compound front and rear, then tailoring feel to taste and results. Most people tend to stick with the same compound on both ends. If you guys have any pictures or feedback on our brake kit, please email them to me! I'm constantly looking for material for our social media, blog, etc. Thanks again gents! Jeff |
