A dumb question
Okay, so as some of the 17+ BRZ owners know, not sure for the gt86’s, but the radio is just a piece of crap in my opinion. Am I able to swap the current stock radio for the radio that came in the 13-16 year models?

This isn’t a dumb question. Why on earth would you want the radio from the old model? You can literally replace it with any double din radio with Apple CarPlay/android auto available on the market now. Kenwood has one with an HD screen that you can order from places like Crutchfield. Double din radios are as cheap as $300 and go up to around $1500 with everything like CarPlay, built in navigation etc. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
I have the 16 version. Do not bother it sucks.

Yeah, none of the stock head units are good at all. Go with an aftermarket head unit.

Alright thanks everyone!

The 2018 head unit is pretty fantastic. It’s one of the better oem units I’ve experienced.

Something to note: Even if you wanted to swap out for the 13-15 units, you would have had issues with your door speakers (the amp wire is located on the 28-pin connector as opposed to the 10-pin connector on the FR-S, 86, and BRZs before MY2016.

Besides being ugly as sin, I thought the audio quality of the 13 frs base unit was pretty ok. That said, I agree, get a new aftermarket dbl din.

To answer "why an OEM radio?", in my case I bought a '14 Pioneer GPS model to replace my '13 base radio because it fits. I didn't like the look of the spacers that I saw available. Then again I'm not an audiophile so the sound on the OEM systems is fine by me.
Too bad Pioneer doesn't sell their 200mm radios in the US https://www.pioneer.com.au/shop/car/avh-zl5150bt/ |
I love my Kenwood DNX series.
