Request: resonated straightpipe
 

Does anyone run a resonated catback with catless/unresonated everything else (hd/op/fp) so I can hear what it sounds like? Basically almost full straightpipe except a resonated CBE with the muffler.

That's not a straight pipe if it has a resonator and a muffler.

I can tell you from experience, a fully catless setup with just one resonator is loud and raspy like no other while NA. If you're turboed, it's a bit more bearable but still super loud.

The rasp and awful noises are NOT worth it, if you are full catless. I have a single hi-flow cat in my front pipe with a resonator and muffler and there is still rasp.

A video from a set-up like this will be deceiving more then likely. Rasp and the tin-can/high pitched tone don't correlate well to most audio recording set-ups.

Depending on how the exhaust is designed, rasp can be eliminated. Resonated front pipes tend to have small tube diameters...sometimes smaller than OEM.

Ok thanks, was just trying to see if I could be cheap...test pipes are $100 cheaper than the catted and $200 cheaper than catted+resonated. Looks like I'm definitely going to get the catted front pipe for peace of mind. Thanks guys

Agreed, I went with a 2.5" OD Front pipe and hi-flow cat and still have some rasp. I think the Invidia/HKS are like 2.3" and those do rasp, as well.

Would you care to send me over your big diameter front pipe? Happy to test for rasp! ;)

It will make your ears bleed. Badly.

The below clips aren't of straight pipe front pipe, but it will be about the same tone but louder. The unknown part is what exhaust, because every different design in resonator & muffler size will make the final sound different.

You can clearly hear "rattle" with baffle types, this is the drawback of running full catless and mixing different types and sizes on resonators in the exhaust stream.

I should note, I ran this last setup at COTA, the car was quite tame sound-wise at WOT. The "annoying" part is the rattle, you can hear it in the car if the rear seats are down.

Catted does not mean it's quieter.

Berk HFC front pipe is louder than stock by almost 4db with stock everything else.

Wait.. Some months ago people here said catted is quieter than no cat, and in my mind that made sense since the sound has to travel through a material, and I based my entire setup and everything off of that. But it's incorrect? :mad0259:

The first one doesn't sound that bad to me. The 2nd has a split second of ear-piercing rasp. Do not want.

All things equal, a catted setup will be quieter than a catless. The Berk setup probably has a hi-flow cat, thinner material and may be a bit wider? So yes, it would absolutely be louder than stock.

wtf is the point of a resonated CBE if it won't reduce the unwanted frequencies. Did I just fuck up my whole exhaust setup? lol

I'm not following. A high flow cat is louder than a stock cat, sure. Are there uncatted front pipes that have a db increase of less than 4db? I don't think I've looked at the db increases for front pipes (if there even are many recorded), honestly curious.
