You all are just a lovely crowd, and I have enjoyed my BRZ immensely in a way I have not enjoyed previous cars. Two months in to owning my BRZ, on an exit ramp, I was rear-ended quite hard - as designed, the car absorbed a substantial amount of energy and it looks like the worse of this is the damage to vehicles and minor bruises. Beyond the obvious damage, it appears that part of the frame was bent into the rear passenger wheel and the car was undrivable. That wheel also appears to have suspension damage (and I'll speculate that perhaps the wheel is also bent?) Both rear tires will probably need to be replaced as one has been literally sliced into by the metal with significant tread damage (it did not blow out, but it's deep enough to warrant concern).

So, in forum tradition, I have posted a poll - do you think it will be totaled?

Do you know the repair cost vs vehicle value percentage your insurance company uses to determine write off? If it was a 13 I would have little doubt they would write it off but being a 17 it may not go over the threshold. Really sort of hard to guess anyway since it could look far better or worse than it really is.

Here I believe the mandated threshold by law is 75%.

My guess is around $12-14k. Close to the limit but not over it unless I am off about the car's value. The important bits of chassis and suspension are likely fine for the most part. Maybe something replaceable got bent. They will have to get creative for fixing the structure under the quarter panel and bumper, and it would look a bit off if you could see it but they are going to replace and paint the exterior panels anyway.

Soooo any update? How's the car?

Damage is up to about 11 with the possibility of going higher as the repair process begins. I'm still about three weeks away from getting the car as the shop I preferred it be taken to made it clear from the start that there would be a delay due to existing jobs and that this was a pretty significant repair job from a labor perspective (their reputation is exceptional...hence they have a lot of jobs but would rather set back their start date for new jobs than rush existing ones, and they've been nothing but honest and pleasant to deal with from the start.) Geico deserves credit here...the adjustor has been great and committed to using genuine OEM Subaru parts as opposed to third party OEM-equivalents.

Upon getting the car back I'll have to deal with the Diminished Value claim, which seems to be a PITA because insurance companies apparently often use a contested formula that almost always undervalues the accelerated depreciation caused by the accident.

After that is complete I'm not sure what the final outcome will be. I do believe that the body shop can get the car back to cosmetic and functional excellence, but I also feel like I will always now equate the car with the accident, and that's all I'll be able to see when looking at it. Part of me says maybe try to love the car again with something different and new like perhaps the Tommy Kaira spoiler, or perhaps purchase a cheap set of 17-inch wheels and some RE71R's as I'd love to do some amateur cone killing. Part of me says that because the feeling is never going to be the same, perhaps look at the 2018 BRZ or the 2018 STI.

I wrecked mine 8 months in (only 7k in damage) but it is possible to love again. Just buy her some new things to make her feel pretty! :wub:

Holy crap I think I've seen your car waiting to be fixed. Didn't associate blue BRZ sitting there with rear damage to yours lol. Makes me a bit sad when I drive by.

Also, I was right!

totaled... the portion around the tail light is like a whole piece of side of the car.


That alone is pushing it.

That sucks, but luckily can be replaced. I'm going to bet it's a write off.
