Oil recommendation for short driving distance in freezing conditions
 

Do you any oil 0W-20 with additive package orientated to short distance driving (16 km) in extreme cold weather conditions -20°C ? The oil must manage around 3000 km just the winter season.

Currently using Castrol Edge.

The issue with short drives is temperature. Need to see above 200F to boil the moisture out of it.

That's right. Is there any oil with additives for this application ? High humidity, gasoline in the oil due to idle operation this kind of severe condition.

An occasional longer drive would be your best option, IMHO. Even if it's just once a week. A drive to get up to temp for a little bit to allow it to burn off excess moisture.

The general rule of thumb is that your oil needs to be at full operating temp for ~20 min for all normal amounts of condensation/fuel/contaminants to be removed. Obviously that's a pretty loose number, but you get the idea. As mentioned, take your car for a nice ride on the weekends and you should be good to go. It will easily survive 3000km under those conditions.

You're probably best off just to deal with it the old fashioned way ..... take a longer drive every now and then (as mentioned) and change the oil more often.

Even if I found an oil that claimed that it could absorb fuel/moisture/contaminates ..... I wouldn't believe it.

It seems that the best option is to have the Sunday coffee at a service station 20 minutes away.

I had the same concerns about my short drive to work so I installed the forester oil cooler hooked up through the throttle body that helped heat the oil quicker in the winter months and still controlled high temps at the track during the summer.

I use a 5W30 oil in these temperatures without issues.

The question was in the direction of the additive package. Some oils are focus on provide better protection with hight load/temperatures or high millage. Given the number of cars working in these severe conditions, short commuting. Maybe there are oils for providing better protection in short distances, moisture, idle operation.

Honestly, you're in a great situation.. You have an excuse to drive your car for longer than you need to, and you'll have to keep the revs up to get that oil cooking inside your engine. :D
