Mounting a radar detector

I saw a video on Youtube about mounting a radar detector and running the cable under the windshield and to the glove box. Does anyone know where I can find a thin and long cable to route it to the glove box? Also, the DC power adapter that will accept a phone cord to power the detector. I've tried multiple retailers (Best Buy, walmart etc.) and audio specialty shops but I can't find anything other than the standard power cable with the mute adapter built in.

Detector is Escort 8500x.

Thanks in advance.

Do you have the Homelink or Auto-Dimming Mirror?

You could try something like www.invisicord.com. It'd save you a lot of time taking the interior apart to tuck the wires out of sight.

You could make your cable from bits you have laying around. I did this to make my stealth V1 setup in a previous car. I just had 3 inches of the wire poking out from the headliner.

I have the autodim mirror but a lot of people I've talked to have said to avoid wiring it into the mirror. I guess after awhile it can cause issues with the mirror's electronics. :iono:

I have had 3 cars with Homelink and have tapped the mirror for power in all 3-----no problems.

Like poudre, I've also had several cars where I've tapped the mirror for power and had no issues.

Ok, cool. I'll look into going that route. Thanks!

i got you a much better idea -- get the SOLO S3 -- wireless and the battery lasts for weeks (2AA) -- great unit also and very decent reviews - and the best deal you can put it anywhere since no cables !

I dont trust cordless detectors.

So who has experience running detectors in VA?

As you shouldn't.

As great as most of Escort's products are, the Solo series are subpar. Cordless detectors draw less power and conserve battery by turning the oscillator off for a short period of time (fraction of a second or so). That time they are in a "sleep" mode means they can't provide you with detection. Not to mention that at any moment the batteries could be on their last limb or already out and you're under a false sense of security. Call me paranoid, but I don't like those risks.

As for using RDs in VA/DC/Canada, definitely use at your own risk. If you must, get one with "stealth" (not detected by RD detectors) and conceal it inside your car (perhaps under a baseball cap or on your visor inside one of those CD holders). Beltronics STi Driver, Escort Redline, and any external RD are all stealth.

I have an Escort Passport 8500 with a short phone cord power cable with cigarette lighter power adapter. It not work well in my BRZ if at all. Since I don't have homelink to tap into a power source by the mirror, I've just ordered this: http://amzn.com/B0003NN83U

Hopefully it will do the job

I actually prefer to run the phone cord to the glove box. I just have no clue where to find a DC cigarette adapter to use with a standard phone power cord. Where did you get yours ATL BRZ?

Then get one of these "Add a Fuse" things at your local parts store or:
http://www.parts-express.com/pe/show...number=071-580

Then run the wire tucked in to the head liner (no need to remove), then down inside the drivers side A pillar cover (it pops right off and back on easily) and then to the fuse box. It worked great for me, and took all of maybe 10 minutes.
