Need advice on dealer mechanic prices
I dropped off the car at a Subaru dealer last night to get the clutch checked since it has been making a squealing noise when it’s pressed. You can hear it in and out of the car. Other than that everything seems fine. It’s a 2015 Series.Blue that I bought about 10 months ago when it had just under 29k miles and it’s been making this noise probably since December but when it started it wasn't every day or as noticeable as it is now.
Dealer just called me and said warranty expired in January, and it’ll cost me $1200-1800 depending on if they need to change the pressure plate and or flywheel or anything else while they’re in there. And the guy told me it’s not covered under the powertrain warranty, that he’s done this before. Just to diagnose it they have to take out he transmission which will run me about $400. Should I go with the dealer or find another mechanic? How does that price sound? And assuming the clutch is fine and it’s just the clutch fork making the noise shouldn’t that be covered by the 6 year warranty? |
AFAIK TOB and Clutch Fork are points of failure in our cars and should technically be covered since they tend to fail sooner than expected. That being said the prices seem very steep. I'd shop around and ask your local group for a reliable mechanic.
2200$+ doesnt sound right for potential clutch change. |
I had my TOB replaced for 700$, including diagnosis. I would bring the TSB and make they replace it under warranty.

Thanks guys, if it comes to that I will definitely give it a try. My clutch seems fine and their excuse of "well we might as well change it while we're in there" seems completely bogus. I took the car back for the time being and I'm gonna give this a shot since I'm getting the same exact noise that this guy had at the beginning of the video. The grease cost me $8, hopefully it does the trick, if not I'll try my uncle's mechanic, I gave him a call and he told me the dealer was being ridiculous and to take it to him if needed.
