2017 T86 concerns
 

Hi Everyone,

I bought my first new car, 2017 Toyota 86 in November 2016.
Great car at first, but as time progressed the car began making noises that I questioned plenty of times- if its normal for a new car?!

Concern#1
2-3 months in, the rear end and window began to rattle with the engine and as I drove. I took it to the dealer but they thought I was was imaging it.

After 8 months, the noise was more constant and they decided to replace the drive shaft. The noise continues to this day and progressively gets worse. Their explanation is that the T86 is a "race car" so expect noises and that the new T86 model is a new version so they are also not sure.

Concern#2
11-12 months, the engine began making a minor clicking sound that would intermittently appear at higher revolutions. I couldn't get the symptoms to appear when I visited the dealer, so they said they claimed it was the fuel pump.

After 18 months, the clicking noise is more constant, louder, and occures when the car is idle. The dealers' explanation was that it's a "saburu engine" in a toyota car (Are you kidding me?). After a few minutes, they then claim the engine design does not secure injectors enough on the right side, creating the noise.

Concern #3
13-15 months in, the engine also began making a minor turbine noise blowing out air. After it got worse, the dealer's explanation was that the boxer engine is releasing extra pressure through a valve.

Their explanations half the time blame the design of the vehicle and/or engine. All these concerns are now worse with the same dealer telling me to not worry about it and to just drive the car.

As more times passes by, the more I wish I could just return this car or get my money back

Generally, I have found that this car is relatively "noisy". Why is that? For several reasons.

The engine has a lot of moving parts (duel overhead cams with VVT) and the design is spread out (lots of chain driven stuff) (i.e.H-4). It is a relatively complex engine (two fuel injection systems, for example).

The car is made with weight savings in mind, therefore, lightweight materials are used and any sound deadening materials are minimal.

The occupants sit close to the engine and driveline.

As far as your observations.

#1 - do you mean the rear part of the body of the car and the rear window (as opposed to the differential) ..?? If so, I suggest you make sure there is nothing in the trunk that is rattling (including the stuff under the tray in the back - spare tire & tools). Check and make sure it's not the back of the rear seat latches.

#2 - I would guess that the "clicking sound" that you hear from the engine IS the HPFP. That sucker can change its tune with the seasons and the type of fuel it's pumping. I'd suggest you use a listening device (even a rod against the pump and your ear) to see if you can isolate where the sound is coming from.

#3 - as far as the "turbine" sound have you eliminated or plugged up the sound tube (generator) .. ?? If not, I suggest you do that to see if that eliminates (or at least reduces) the sound coming into the cabin.

I hope you get things sorted out (and/or at least have a better understanding of what's going on) so you will be able to enjoy driving your car.

Why not take it to the dealer?

Sounds like he has, several times. It doesn't appear that the dealer is much help. Maybe take it to a different dealer??

To me, based on his scarce information he's given us, I doubt he's told the dealership much, in regards to the engine issue. He couldn't even recreate the problem himself, and that is kind of the first step. The dealer would just be looking in a random place trying to diagnose the issue.

I think you have expected too much from this car, It is not a Camry or Corolla, it doesn't mean for maximum comfort and quiet. they had to save money in some spots.

some part of the car will rattles and start falling apart little by little here and there. like Jordanwolf said, It's not an M3 or an Audi, so expect random noises here and there. Its an affordable Japanese sport coupe.

I have actually seen the reverse happen. As the car get's older many of the creaks, squeaks and peaks have disappeared. Not sure if they just wore enough to not rub, rattle or rustle anymore but it is certainly less noisy.


As far as the noises the engine makes it can be summed up in two words. Subaru Boxer. People that expect inline or V block sound from a boxer engine are going to be disappointed. Add the fact it is direct and port injection (two totally different noises) and has the sound proofing of a Motel 6 guest room and you hear things that just don't seem right. They are fine. People want RWD with luxury car quiet and super car performance for an entry level price and then complain when they don't get it.

He's just a one post wonder, so meh.

Because I keep cars so long, I'm used to the misc. noises that come from them and am almost deaf to it. In fact, like a city dweller that can't sleep without traffic noise in the country, I have a difficult time adjusting to driving a "quiet" car.

Yep, for those that think the FR-S is a noisy vehicle ....... never has driven one of these .....:confused0068:

PS- the videos sound pretty normal.

The 3rd brake light can rattle sometimes.

The engine stuff all sounds normal. High pressure fuel pump, direct injectors, and VVT are all specific sources for the noises. Sound tube block is a good thing to try.
