Loud ticking from engine
Hello,
2013 MT with 70k miles, started getting a very loud ticking sound that increases in rate with RPM. It doesn't sound violent like rod knock , and it is present at any RPM above 950, cold or hot. The rate of the ticking gets faster with more RPMs; by 4000 rpm its so fast it sounds like buzzing. Sounds like its only coming from the passenger side/right side head. Car is turbocharged with a 50-trim, was running very low boost (8 psi) when it started happening. I was getting onto the freeway, and when boost was coming on around 4.2k rpm the car jolted as if i hit the rev limiter. A few miles later the ticking sound started. Oil level has been fine, and this happened 3 miles after I had done an oil change. AFR is fine, builds boost a little bit slower, and no codes are present. My question is, does this sound like a bent rocker arm? Stuck valve? Broken valve spring? Any help is appreciated. https://youtu.be/yDFU5XgZ8L8 https://youtu.be/1m_U4BdeYJ4 https://youtu.be/VdItkY7hwrU https://youtu.be/9XlV2hF7PcQ |
The 2nd YouTube video sounded like my FRS before it died due a VVT issue. http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=125879

Oh, my ......that don't sound good ..... has the car given you any codes .....?? Back in the day ...... I would have called that a stuck lifter or a valve out of adjustment. However, today, with this engine, I would have to guess that it's a rod knocking ...... sorry. humfrz |

Hopefully, some other folks will chime in.
I listened to your 2nd u-tube posting and it still sounds like a rod knocking to me. (I hope I'm wrong) humfrz |
Pre 15' are known to potentially develop rocker arm issues. Valve cover is going to have to come off from the sounds of it.

Just wanted to give an update;
I pulled the engine out and took it apart, it has a badly bent rod. Bearings are okay. Haven't taken the shortblock completely apart yet so I'm not sure if the cylinder wall is okay. Too-small of a turbo gives too much torque at low RPMs which the stock rods can't handle and end up bending. I had a small 50-trim, even though it was low boost it came on too quick. I remember now that when it happened, I was getting on the gas in third at low RPMs, should have downshifted :bonk: Thanks to everyone that chimed in. |
