How did the gold cool tape go so far? did you have to change your coilpacks?

I have had several (bout 6 so far) coilpack failures. I can tell you what didnt work and what "kind of worked".

Gold (reflective) tape did nothing, coilpack overheated in exactly the same amount of track days.

Hood vents (Verus) helped, they added 1 day to the survival of coilpacks (from 3 to 4).

Wrapping the header, didnt help, same story.

Up to this day, I go thru 2 to 3 coilpacks a season. I will change harness and coilpacks to a 2015 once I do the sparkplugs, which is probably after this season. All of the above mentioned fixes were done one by one, and cummulative (one of top of the other) everytime a new coilpack failed.

I think CSG has a potential long term coil pack fix. PM me for now.

Coilpacks fail and that is a fact. Said that, heat in the coilpacks will promote them to fail faster as heat reduces electrical conductivity.
Sources of heat are the header, the exhaust pipe under 1 and 3 cylinders, the hood enclosure. Some of you talked about it. Addressing these items will marginally help.
A hidden source for heat to the eye comes from the direct injectors. When the injector seals go which in the track environment is unavoidable, heat from combustion will escape in very small amounts and heat the surrounding areas and trust me, it will affect the coilpack and the spark performance. You will repeteadly see these P035X codes pop up at the track and sometimes even in the street if you rev it hard enough and heat it to that point.
I have more than 25k track miles in my 14 BRZ and I had these codes for a long time until I figured this out. They went away for over a year now after I replaced my direct injector seals and the coilpacks with latest part number.

I just had a CEL come up on the day it felt like 42 celcius in Toronto

i parked it and few days later connected the scanner and it popped P0353..

I figure it may have been heat related. I took the rail cover off the passenger side and re-installed both coil packs and retightened them just to make sure.. nothing looked off though

cleared the code on the scanner and took it for a spin for about 30km... the CEL hasn't re-emerged... If this becomes an dissue for the engine again, the CEL should come right back on the dash right?

Do you guys think i should just buy new coilpacks from toyota and install them as a precaution?

It's interesting that you are running the new MY15 coil packs with the redesigned connector but still experiencing the same issues.. I wonder what the point of the redesign was then?

I had my wiring harness updated to use the newer design back in 2015 after getting the CEL from tracking. Since then I've done nearly 150 trackdays without the coilpacks being an issue (including multiple summers in Texas with temps as high as 114F).

It was done under warranty, so I just dropped off my car and picked it up a day or two later. However, it looks tougher than I would have wanted to do on my own.
