Where are your RPMS

I wanted to get an idea of where your rpms are when on the highway. For me cruising around 110km/h @3000rpm in 6th gear and its a MT. Where are you guys at?

dcfr 07-24-2012 04:17 PM

That's right. For MT is about 3000 and for AT is about 2500 on highway. Hope it helps.

Just purely for gas savings reasons, I try and keep the car at 2K rpms.

If you haven't noticed, the little up shift light kicks in at about 3K rpms. So if 3K is the "break even economy" rpm, then I try and stay under that.

But I have to admit, I can't help but rev this car to 5k-7k just to hear the engine noise. It's way too much fun.

To keep the 2K RPM limit you're aiming for while cruising with a manual on the highway you would need to be going around 80-90 KM/H.

I assumed you meant you tried to limit yourself to that for city driving.

sorry meant to quote you.

6th gear @ 2k rpm ~= 80km/h

so if you are staying at around 2k rpm you are cruising at 80km/h on the highway?

Heero 07-25-2012 02:09 PM

I only drive 100 on 400 series highways

Speed limits need to be bumped up & people driving 100 in the middle lane need to be fined...

You guys are assuming way too much. And when you assume, you make an ass out of u and me.

Why on earth would I crawl around at 2K rpms in 6th gear. You guys are acting like I was saying "I never go above this speed". How logical is that??

Of course I don't stay at 2K rpms in 6th. I just try and cruise below 2K for gas savings. So when I'm driving, I accelerate to whatever the speed limit is (or slightly over) and try to find a gear which will keep me at 2K. Not the other way around.

Typically this is 3rd, 4th, 5th, or 6th depending on what speed I want to be going. Highway speeds would mean I'll need to go higher then 2K in 6th gear. I'm talking in general terms here, not just highway driving.

Come on guys, use some logic!

fair enough, I think most people are in the same boat, when you are cruising on a road its better to just pop it into a higher gear to lower your rpms and just down shift if you need to speed up.

the reason for assumption was because this discussion was about highway RPMs

Speed limits should be increased to 120 km/h as they are in many parts of Europe. It's not as though 120 km/h is even that fast for a 3-4 lane highway.

I'm confused about what you're asking. The gear ratios are all the same for every MT FR-S. Are you asking to compare to other cars?

120 is the unofficial limit on the 400 series highway IMO. You usually do not get pulled over if you go below that.

True, but by raising it officially to 120, then I would be able to go 130-140 without anyone giving me a hassle. At least that's what I hope would be the case.
