Yep. Time to order up some spares :)

Maybe I should rethink my late braking antics.... Or add brake ducts.

UncleFester 03-24-2013 08:46 PM

Made me go check mine. No cracks. I wouldn't say I brake too late or hard. Fascinating.

What pads have you been running?

how many days and which pads are you using?

Ummmm... Could you please elaborate on that?

I thought these brakes were supposed to be able to handle much faster/heavier cars with out a problem. I appreciate there are many variables involved.

Brake rotors are a wear item, the harder you are on them, the faster they wear.

Captain Snooze 03-25-2013 12:24 AM

Sure sure sure ,understood, but is cracking considered "wear"? Is cracking a disc an acceptable event when given a hard time?

CL RC6E. I have confidence in the brakes to the point that I brake pretty late, and very hard. Not the best technique probably to save parts but I've also been trying to push it further and further to see just how late I could go. The RC6E's are sintered fully metallic pads and generate quite a bit of heat, more than semi-metallics from the temp data I gathered. These rotors saw north of 1,200 degrees in less than 20 minutes.

Also, I was driving three cars this weekend, there were a few times when I came off the track and switched cars, which is, IMO what caused the crack in the first place. Normally I give the brakes more cool down and roll the car a bit to reduce hot spots, I didn't do that every time this weekend.

On track cars, the wear is from the stress applied to the rotors, and they tend to crack far before they become thin like you would see on a street car. Once they crack like this you replace them. I'm curious to see what kind of life he is seeing out of these though (number of track days and which pad was being used)

C300 and CL RC6E. The CL's are much better at high temps, and they stay consistent.

With the brakes, probably 8 days or so. I got 2 days out of the OEM rotors.

They can. Rotors are going to go and I have been pushing my braking points further and further to see just how much I could do before I missed the turn in point. I found that on a few turns, but not others.

Sebring isn't the easiest on brakes either, and most of my track time is there, including this weekend.

I've been staying HARD on the brakes until the end of braking, instead of letting up over time. In other words, my technique is generating higher temps.

Yes, very acceptable. We've cracked rotors worse than this on the race car in 5-6 hours...

D1cker 03-25-2013 12:38 AM

8 days at sebring is like 20 days out west, glad to see they're holding up to so much abuse.
