Engine Braking or lack thereof

2017 Limited BRZ MT 2700 miles.
When downshifting into 2nd and engine braking from 7000 rpms, between 6000 and 7000 rpms it feels like there's no engine braking. Feeling more like the computer is adding gas or just coasting, then all of a sudden around 6000 rpms, it slows down as expected.

Never ever felt anything like that in any car I've owned including the 2013 BRZ. Anyone else with a 2017 experience the same thing?

Sorry I can't help I got a 2013, but you reminded me of one of my favorite pics

Lol. Stock brakes usually last me a long time. Had over 150,000 on my old 2000 Integra Type R. Had 65,000 miles on 2013 and still had half the stock pad left.

Are you hitting the rev limiter / safety fuel hang in this thing. Wtf are you engine braking at 7k+ in second anyways?

I read that he was downshifting into 2nd gear ....... not 1st ...... :iono:

However, trying to shift even into 2nd gear at 7,000 rpms ...... could set the system up for an over rev. ...... money shift ....... engine go boom .......:(

Is there a reason the dumbest stuff seems to show up on weekends?

I don't see a huge issue with what he is asking... am I missing something?
He didn't necessarily claim he does this all the time... maybe he was just having a little bit of fun, and noticed something odd.

FWIW, I have a 2017 BRZ Limited AT and I use the paddle shift/manual mode regularly. I experience similar behavior when downshifting to engine brake and it doesn't require hitting high rev ranges. It especially happens for me at low speeds downshifting into 1st from 2nd. The car will accelerate slightly under light braking when downshifting and we're talking like hitting max maybe 4k rpms.

Downshifting to engine brake at 7000 RPM? You learn to drive from Initial D Arcade Stage?

arren123 03-12-2018 04:52 PM

It's not necessarily from downshifting from 3rd to 2nd.
You can you rev up to 7000 rpms in second gear and let go of the gas and let the dang thing engine brake. It's well within it's normal operating range.
Can someone confirm that has a 2017 Manual if they experience the same thing I described?
