Hit Road with my 2017 86

1 Attachment(s)
My car hit the road in front this morning. I wonder should i bring the car to dealer to probably replace the bumper since the car is pretty new or should i take it to local shop and do myself? If so, is there any recommendation around Seattle area?

Thank you guys!

8RZ 03-08-2018 04:23 PM

Whoa, did the road jump out from behind a tree or something?

Tcoat 03-08-2018 04:25 PM

Get some quotes from reputable shops. Most dealers just farm it out and take a cut anyway. Those dealers that do have body shops are usually way more expensive.

And I gotta ask... How the heck did you hit the road?

mav1178 03-08-2018 04:27 PM

My tires hit the road every morning.

bkharmony 03-08-2018 04:28 PM

I thought this was going to be a travelogue.

Thanks for the advise. I also wonder will these body work show as damage on those auto check report? Besides, i'm also considering just replace with some aftermarket font spoiler in this case if that necessary?

P.S. It's heavy rainy day today and my car just spin at corner when i just came out of my house...

Oh so you smacked a curb not the "road". That makes more sense.
If you do not go through insurance it will not show up on a report. An aftermarket spoiler will not cover that damage and probably wouldn't fit properly anyway.

Bumper is sagging a bit there, did the clips get damaged on that side when you hit the road? Or was it like that already because twin?

The bigger question is what was the temperature when it happened? If on stock tires, in the cold, on a wet surface then even the traction control can't help much.

I don't think that the bumper sag issue is very common after about 2015. At least nobody seems to complain about it in those years.

Clipdat 03-08-2018 05:04 PM

Sure it can, as long as you're not driving like an asshole and going way too fast for the conditions.

Looks like OP already sold his stock tires, presumably has something with more grip now.

Pretty easy to screw up when the tires are hard as a rock though. Doesn't take much. It was so cold here a while back that even my snow tires firmed up to the point that I almost lost it on an onramp.

Looks like BFG sport comp2 a/s from the bit of tread I can see...

@Ultramaroon 's house. I have been in his garage and if doesn't have what you need to fix something in there then it doesn't exist.

Word has it that ol @Ultramaroon has a garage over across the river, he will rent out.

Caution ...... his base price is reasonable ..... but, everything else is ah-la-cart:

* electricity
* tools (by the tool)
* heat
* light
* water
* rags/paper towels
* if you want the door closed
* access to the lounge
* restroom access
* internet access
* weekend sir charges

And, of course, he will be available for consultation ....... to tell you how you are doing it all wrong.

:D

PS .... OK, I'm late ...... again ...... it's hard to keep up with you working people ......:iono:

Well, that's a shame ...... :sigh:

I reckon your plan of action would depend on your insurance situation.

I don't think your SO's hair dryer and some touch up paint will fix it.

I don't know if a PRD person can re-mold that bumper or not.

NOW, the next time you take us on a tour ...... I'll expect some better pictures ...... ;)

Looking closer, looks like the bumper is warped and mangled. I think OP is looking at needing a replacement unless there are repair methods I'm not aware of. Or that could just be how the 86 bumper looks to begin with... :iono:

Paint might be new enough to get it prepainted to save on masking/blending costs.

The amazing part is he can put his hands right on anything you ask for! I was actually very impressed.

Smacking a curb was a twist.

The shortest travel story ever.

"Adventure called, and my travel partner - a 2017 Toyota 86 - answered. Energized by the sport coupe's perfect balance, telepathic steering, and uncanny handling, I buckled up for anything and everything and hit the road.

No literally.

The End."

Wow! I should post up a picture to show the similarity; right down to the yellow air hose and blue jugs.

RIP road :(

evoto86 03-10-2018 06:31 AM

No offense even with my 16s and shitty stock tires, it looks like you have the trd wheels which are bigger than my 16s this car is extremely controllable in the wet.

kdyg123456 03-10-2018 07:24 PM

BTW, is there any recommendation for body shop in seattle area? It looks like dealers are no longer do the body work.

SCQTT 03-10-2018 07:59 PM

I would not expect the color to be the same. My Halo lost a driver side front fender to a drunk guy driving a golf cart (at a vintage motorcycle festival, I would NEVER play golf) When I went to pick up my car from the on-site Toyota body shop the manger's first words were "I was amazed at how close our guy got the color" Huh? this is a new car, no fading, you use Toyota paint right? (wrong) I assumed it would NOT be close, I thought it would be perfect......exact, -I was wrong. Blah, blah, blah matching paint is an art form, not perfect science. I guess I understand. I've never been in an accident or had a body repair done before.....and I'm old. I'm disappointed. If this thing didn't take such a huge hit in depreciation the first year I would probably swap it for the Battleship Grey Focus RS that has been collecting dust at my local Ford dealership, they cant give that thing away.

I think those people weren't good at paint matching and blending. My parked car got hit and the people at my local body shop did a bang up job. You can't tell where the blending starts and I have the crystal white pearl paint. Now I park way in the corner of the parking lot far away from everyone
