One con that I have noticed however is that if I go to gun it at idle without a load on the motor (like you would do to show off your exhaust to someone in a parking lot) that the rpms will momentary dip followed by a chattering noise before the rpms recover. This is most likely due to air within the intake manifold stalling because of the sudden onset of WOT. The additional rotating mass of the stock pulley would keep things spinning and therefore making this a non issue. Note, this issue does not seem to be a problem actually driving the car and can be avoided by gradually applying the throttle initially.

FYI, you may not need to purchase a breaker bar if you can slip a 3/4" black pipe (3' in length) on the handle of your ratchet.

Also you don't need a fancy torque wrench for this job a bar-type wrench will work fine; however, you may want to use a 12-pt socket to get the best angle for applying the required force on the handle.

Mine dips just a bit now if I do that and I don't have this pulley on it. I am going to buy the pulley though. Or see if the machine shop at work will mill me one out for free! lol...

Great write up for possible first mod to come.

damn, is this mod worth it? Doesn't look like it....

Does the stock pulley double as a harmonic dampener-- or because this is a boxer engine it does not need dampening? I'm purchasing an FR-S next month and this may be one of the first mods I do to it as long as it doesn't ruin the harmonics of the crank-- even just a little.

EDIT: Guys, I'm NOT suggesting anyone tries this with their 86.. it is intended for entertainment purposes only - I had a good laugh and I hope you do too.

I also HIGHLY recommend you check out this Series for more great "How To's and DIY's" :)

It's seriously one of the best programmes I've ever seen (I'm Australian and might be biased) :) ENJOY!

I've thought of that with this car, I've seen it tried with other cars, and trucks.. And it doesn't always work.. Some bigger trucks engines have the torque in the starter to break it lose, but smaller cars didn't... Easiest way is this ... If you have air..

It's like a pneumatic ratchet but works like a impact..

Just installed mine. I was paranoid at first, but this install was a breeze without hesitation. The belt easily came off when you release the tension pulley after you turn it clockwise. This install took me about 10 minutes. My car is more awake now and hardly lags at all in the RPM's in first and second gear. This should be a priority engine mod before going to exhaust or intake.

Had to swap mine hack to stock to return it as its a lemon. Have had the perrin pulley on for about 15k miles. I can tell the difference going back to stock for sure. Rev matching and throttle blips are not as snappy. Cant wait for the new car so I can put it back on.

How long did the whole install take?
local shop told me roughly 4 hours :/ doesnt seem like it'd take that long from what i've read and stuff.

Yruyur 03-11-2013 04:42 PM

Literally 15 minutes. I couldnt find the breaker bar.

I struggled to get my crank bolt out, but I did eventually got it out. It's a simple mod and doesn't take long at all. I would suggest doing the pulley and the intake both at the same time.
