What Factory Extras did you guys get?
Hey guys, my GT86 is arriving in 2 weeks time, and i ordered/considering to order a few extras and i got some questions to those who got similar extras as well:
This is my first NEW car, had 2 2nd hands already, i have no experience with optional extras....and below are quoted prices: toyota sat nav - $1400 Before i start, i must say I'm a newbie towards these sat nav stuff, ANY GT users out there have the toyota sat nav installed?? Is it "decent"? Is it user friendly?? Is it a bad choice for choosing this?? I've read other posts on this forum concerning the fallacy of toyota sat navs and people are claiming that "other" brands do a better job? is this true?:) Reverse Sensors - $525 Would you choose this over the rear camera? Please dont start criticising either one of these options please lol, i have a really bad parking spot at home...:thanks: Blue illuminated lights (floor lights) - $2xx I haven't ordered this but did anyone order this? i can't find any information in regards to this? i was told that this light is similar to the Toyota Rukus? or whatever that bakery van is called. If so, did anyone install this? How is it? Extra Alarm - $500 Protecting my investment....im considering whether to put an extra alarm atm....do people usually get an extra alarm from the factory? or should we shop aftermarket ones?? do all "extra" fitted alarm do the same thing? |
None of those things are factory extras. They are dealer extras. AFAIK the only factory option is the Aero kit on a GTS...
"extra alarm" would suggest it has one already fitted. It doesn't. Just an immobiliser. Alarm may be worth considering. There are many and varied after market alarms available. Some quite simple and some quite complex. Pick one that lowers your insurance premium :) |
FYI, the GTS aero kit is the only factory option (even then it is not completely assembled at the factory). Everything else is dealer fit option, using Australian sourced TMCA accessories.
A genuine reverse camera is yet to be released for 86 (I last checked a week ago though), but dealers have found cameras to install anyway. The reverse sensors and illumination kit (this one is much more $$$ than non-genuine) are genuine TMCA accessories. |
There's a thread about aftermarket head units and in my opinion I didn't really like the sat nav factory one. At last weeks meet a fellow 86er said the satnav drops out quite a bit. Sound system is quite average so you may want to upgrade anyway like most. So consider aftermarket dude.
It's hard to judge reversing so I wish I got the reverse sensors as well.. half the time I leave quite some space in the back.. other 86ers have said the same so they're good. Blur illuminated lights seem cool. No opinion on alarm but adds some extra security. Aftermarket alarms seem yo be set too sensitive by users and so I tend to set quite a bit off with the exhaust I just put on mine.. Wish I actually looked at the extras but dealer never mentioned and I didn't bother.. |
The "extras" I want aren't available at the dealer anyway :P

im all new to this scene, my 2nd hand car before only had a immobolier etc lol:happy0180: |
Speak to your insurance company :P Some brands of alarm are "better" than others and some are "approved" by insurance companies. Not sure how they rate them or shortlist them though.
Just talk to your preferred insurer and see if they have any preferred brands :) |

I'm not at work so cannot check, but for some reason, I thought the 86 used the horn as the alarm? maybe not...
The blue interior LED lighting from the Rukus "limited edition" was a bit gay in my opinion... I know what they were trying to do, but I don't think it hit the mark. You can get a better effect by going to www.hobbycity.com, buying a small strip of LED lights in any colour, then wiring them up and under the dash... might set you back $20 and some time! The Toyota satnav system is very user friendly, but I have also heard VERY good things about the Eclipse aftermarket unit.... |

Oh and after consulting nrma on difference of extra alarms or not, apparently a dealer extra is better cos its 'certified' rather than an aftermarket anyone can put on themselves hence the price will have a slight difference.. don't quote me on it tho as I vaguely remember it as so.. but either way extra alarms are good. |
Just thought I'd put my 2cents in with regards to the backup camera. I've had these for my last several cars and I really would like to have it for the BRZ. I've noticed that the backup camera is an option in Japan, so wouldn't it be offered for N. America too? I'm hoping so. At the time of my order the backup camera & the sensors weren't even an available option.
|
The only dealer option I added, was the alarm. I didn't see a need for a reversing camera or parking sensors.

toyota sat nav - $1400
Outside Market: $500-800 Reverse Sensors - $525 Outside Market: $250-400 Blue illuminated lights (floor lights) - $2xx Outside Market: No idea, are you sure dealer has this option? Extra Alarm - $500 Outside Market: $300-400 See how much you can save. |
You can get most of that stuff done aftermarket at a much cheaper rate. I was quoted $2300 for a top of the line Eclipse upgrade in my GT, I can get a Pioneer fitted for around $1700.
Floor lights...you can do yourself, gotta be tutorials out there. I already helped my brother LeD up his Golf, took 20 minutes. |

I love my Android Google Navigation , seems work really well for me. Never had issues with it. Very rarely drops out

Hi Guys, new to here but in similar situation as the topic starter.
Placed an order on a GT 3 weeks back. Was looking around at the few of the extra options. Dealer came back offering Paint Protection, Interior Protection, Reverse Sensors and Window Tint for $1,500. Worth it? Looking for a few thoughts from fellow members here :) |

I mean, good protection shouldn't need special shampoo.. Your best bet is to go to a professional detailer and get opticoat or ceramic pro 9h, it'll cost less compared to the dealership too I only got reverse sensors and got tint chucked in for free And be very clear about them matching the paint on the sensors.. Mine ended up being bright gloss white instead of being satin white pearl. It's very obvious.. Anyone else here have any paint matching issues? |

The camera can be mounted fairly subtly if you use a decent installer. This was Northfield Car Audio. |
An awful lot of people have trouble with the Satnav dropping out. Weirdly enough it doesn't drop on mine, has lost signal a grand total of once, and the Burnley tunnel is a pretty good excuse. But-- The problem is if most have a problem and only some are good, then you're more likely to be most than some. Don't risk it if you're buying a GT (it's included in GTS).
Parking sensors exist for the Japanese market but they're an aftermarket part with a dorky little screen anyway. The Japanese market also get front and rear parking cameras (but they're not compatible with our GTS, screened, headunit). Don't get a kit that replaces your mirror, it'll reduce your resale value for sure. Personally I found my Nokia N9 connected fast with great sound quality, as does my Galaxy Nexus, but my Galaxy SIII 4G connects very, very, very slowly and bluetooth remote commands are sketchy... EDIT; There's a nice SatNav headunit for the UAE/US made by Pioneer; Have a dig on AV stuff on here and you'll find it. Maybe find out what sort of maps it uses and if you can buy them? Japan gets a whole range of head units but to find details on them you'll have to really go digging unless you can get to Odaiba in Tokyo Bay and go to Megaweb. |

All in all even though it may seem a bit pricey, I think it was a good deal for those who want a bit of convenience and have everything done when the car arrives. I'm sure it's not really comparable, but "full price" totalled to atleast over $2.5k from Toyota. So those in the future looking to obtain some extra options added to their car feel free to reference this! :) |
Just to chime in on the GPS dropout. My unit almost always tells me it has lost the GPS signal within about 30 seconds of startup, but the satnav doesn't actually lose track of the car's position. While this is fairly annoying, it doesn't actually affect the operation of the satnav in my case. It is a bit embarrassing when you have passengers though.
|
I haven't gotten my car yet, but I've got the GTS so the only dealer fitted option I got was the reverse sensors, but got them to do it for free.

I ordered a BRZ so I added
Heated leather seats ($1500) Eclipse Sat Nav media centre ($1815) Reversing camera ($465) Boot carpet mat ($175) BRZ floor mats ($175) and a Auto transmission ($2500) Total drive away price $44,172 How does this compare to a fully loaded GTS ?? Sent from Mark's iPad using Tapatalk HD |
My GTS auto I ordered in January was 42,100 total, It comes with everything you mentioned bar the reversing camera, and obviously the toyota satnav is give or take, depending who you ask. I think the my GTS comes with a rubber boot mat though, or some kind of plastic, I didn't really get a good look haha.
