hp, torque and "fun"

great little explainer video about horsepower and torque in layman's terms. essentially, when you're geared to extract power from the engine, you can enjoy it all - and when you handicap your high hp car with crappy gears for gas mileage or whatever purposes, your supposedly fun car feels like a corolla.

this is one reason why our little 200 hp, 156 ft/lb torque car feels so fun, cause its set up to make the absolute most of what it has unlike many other cars, which are geared for max efficiency instead of max fun.

its also why you have to wring the crap out of it to get to that fun.. but hey.

From what I’ve read Subaru regeared the MY2017 BRZ. My 2017 seems to pull very well up to the beginning of the torque dip, then at about 4700 the power comes back. My 2002 264 AWHP WRX was a blast to drive, my BRZ is Way more fun.

The final drive ratio was shortened for 2017 and the engine had a few more ponies, making it a little zippier than previous year models. I previously had a 2013 WRX hatch, and while it definitely pulled harder in a straight line... the BRZ is indeed more fun to drive.

That's why I eventually moved on from my turbo MR2.. 0-60 got boring after a while, I couldn't drive it in the 3-6K RPM range all the time like my BRZ. With a quality header, there's no torque dip to worry about either.

Coming from Miatas with light weight, low power and short gear ratios, the BRZ feels right at home.

Really, everything I’ve read says there is very little if any gains to our engines power with exhaust modifications. What header and what exhaust are you using?

The power isn't really increased much, but with a header/tune, it's easy to eliminate the stock torque dip making the powerband more linear. The manual MY17s with the revised engines don't have quite as much room for improvement IIRC thanks to the updates.

If you can not go fast go loud.

Loud seems faster and is more fun.
