Back To Basics Toyota 86: STX & 86 Cup Street Build

I always like starting build threads with a bit of history - it gives a firm base for where I started and gives some background for the new project. I've been in the Miata world for the last 8 years and it has been quite the journey. From local time attack events (Global Time Attack & Redline Time Attack) to lapping days at Laguna Seca, I have been through a lot with this car.

A project overview for my Miata can be seen in the video below:

After 8 years with the Miata, I decided it was time for some change. I picked up a nearly new Toyota 86 at the start of this year! My 86 came with a number of TRD goodies including the wheels, springs and exhaust.

A lot of people have been asking me why go backwards with a stock 86? The answer is simplicity. After tuning and tweaking for so long my priorities have changed. I want more of a turn key car that requires less baby sitting and one that I can spend more time driving - my favorite activity.

The goal for "Shaggy" will be STX class for SCCA autocross and 86 Cup Street class. I am very excited to take all the knowledge I've gained over the years and apply it to the 86 in a more focused manner. Along with the requisite build thread I want to keep a better record of my experience with the 86 and part of that will be videos. Hope you enjoy the thread and the video series!

First Autocross Report - SDBMWCCA Event

I picked up the car on 1/7/18 and six days later took it to autocross as delivered! I've been instructing with the San Diego BMWCCA for about 6 years and they put on the best autocross events in our region. Big flowing courses make the perfect testing ground for new parts. My wife and I co-drove this event in the 86 to get a feel for the platform before making any major changes.

Overall I am really impressed with the car and the balance with the TRD springs is FUN! Even the stock tires, though slow, made the day entertaining! Coming from my Miata you can feel how much lighter the car steers thanks to the low center of gravity. I also found the ABS to be very intuitive and it did not seem as prone to activating ICE mode over uneven pavement. Our lot is very rough and I have experienced inconsistent behavior in some car's ABS systems.

I did my best to document the day for another video, looking forward to more fun with the car and to begin the modding! First up will be an oil cooler as well as some proper wheels and tires. I am still in the research phase for headers and coilovers.

I was really happy with the results during timed runs too, no trophies but all runs were within .010 seconds!

Thanks for posting. I like the video and how you explain your reasoning for certain things. That Miata has to be a TON of fun to drive. I think you'll enjoy the journey with your 86, and I'm looking forward to following the progress. Cheers!

subbed! your miata is awesome, looking forward to see the progress on this GT86

Oh, and I know there has been a ton written about OFT, but I'd still like to hear your take on it. I think you and I have very similar approaches to doing things and similar priorities. I await the OFT video.

The Miata has been a blast, it makes about 250-260 to the tire with the Rotrex. This lets your terrorize much bigger cars on track. I'm going to be taking some of the aero and supercharger off to make it a better HPDE learning tool for my wife.

I've had an OFT for about a year on my wife's daily, a Fiat 500 Abarth. I'll have something up about the OFT for the 86 later this week hopefully. Then time to head to the dyno for baselines and E85.

Thanks! I hope they clear the AP Racing Sprint BBK I have my eye on. I'd like to keep the TRD wheels for street duty.

My biggest advice is just sign up for the event and get out there! The community is great and very helpful to novice drivers. Since you are in the San Diego area, I highly recommend signing up for a San Diego BMWCCA event. You do not have to own a BMW to be a BMWCCA member and the events give you more laps, instructors for free (I've been an instructor for 7 years) and much more. If you have questions shoot me a PM!

Good read. Will be interested to see your mod list for this car.

I would recommend print this out and test to see if it fits or not.

Thanks! I like this one since it includes a few other BBKs. I've had the template for the Sprint kit on my desk for the last week, just need to make some time to take a look :-).

Parts are being collected, I've got an OpenFlash header with overpipe ready to go as soon as my new gaskets arrive. I am also waiting on the delivery of a Perrin intercooler so I can get the 86 on the big track too.
