How to gap spark plugs
 

I purchased hks spark plugs for the brz as my turbo requires a replacement if over 15k.

I was told I should gap to .022.
On the spark plug box it says:

Do not adjust spark plug gap due to extremely fine center electrode.

How would I get the bad boys to .022?

Plug gaps don't have to be perfect. The iridium-tipped center electrode greatly reduces the voltage required to trigger an arc. It's also delicate.

Install them straight from the box. :thumbsup:

The ultimate racing techs who designed their turbo kit says it is a must that they be gapped to .22.

It's gapped at around .32

Just gap them, if you break the electrode you screwed up, try again. You probably wont though. Just make sure you aren't using a coin style gap tool, since they'll most likely break the tip.

I doubt you wanna go through the trouble of pulling the plugs on this motor if it starts blowing out spark.

But why you need change them after 15k miles?

Gotta ask them. They need to be gapped at 22 if they are over 15k they require replacing according to them. It's a "must." I trust that they know what they are talking about and I confirmed with them that yes, they want them to be changed is one 15k. Sensitive turbo perhaps, /shrug.

If the cylinder is charged and the valves are closed and the piston is at/near the top of its compression stroke and the spark plug fires ....... what's to "blow out the spark" ........:popcorn:

Which brings to mind a back-on-the-farm story.

It was a cold, sunny day in late August, when we were picking corn. We had just pulled the loaded wagon up to the elevator to upload the corn into the corn crib.

My father was trying to start the Wisconsin engine on the elevator, but it wouldn't start. So, he laid the plugged in spark plug on top of the cylinder head and pulled the rope to see if he could see a spark. Like I said, it was a bright sunny day.

Anybody see where this is going ......??

My father told me to hold the spark plug in my bare hand, while he pulled the starting rope, so I did ....... since I jumped and let out a yelp ....... he figured the plug was firing.

Now, that diagnostic strategy just works once per kid ...... ;)

It is true. Too much push it down, not enough, bend it up. Use guage. Pretty simple.

Hey, Skippy, are those plugs REALLY set at .32" (that's almost a third of an inch).

I was jest ah funnen with your math (and/or ability to read measurements).

And yes I used the gap tool to read how the were gapped. Could I be wrong sure, does that require ridicule? I guess since it's the internet. Anyways, I don't want to argue, but if you have helpful info I appreciate it otherwise I can do without.
