2018 86DRIVE Challenge

Hello, we've changed our name from NorCal 86CUP to 86DRIVE Challenge! Not to worry though, we're still the same group of people, doing track days in a similar format, but at the same time doing things a little differently. Here's a summary of some of the exciting things that are happening:
  • Joining forces with the already-well-established NorCal 86DRIVE community to broaden our reach and bring more drivers to our events
  • Changing our name from NorCal 86CUP to 86DRIVE Challange
  • Simplified ruleset to make those forms easier to fill out. Most people should more-or-less be in the same class as before
  • NEW URL for our website: http://www.86drivechallenge.com/
  • Calculator has been updated, so please visit the new site to figure out your class
  • Championship classes have been reduced from 5 to 4 this year, including: GTRadial Stock, GTRadial Street, Touring, Unlimited
  • NEW "Sport" class. This class is intended for newer (or timid) drivers who are just joining our series, and don't feel comfortable competing against the veteran drivers yet, but still want to be part of the fun. There are no mod restrictions in this class, and it does not earn championship points for the season
  • NEW sponsors: Please welcome The Racers Line, Bluemoon Performance, and Verus Engineering as new sponsors for 2018! GTRadial is again, our title sponsor, and Winmax, Elite Performance, 86DRIVE are continuing to support us this year
  • Special shoutout to Scott Grasso, our "official/unofficial" photographer, who tirelessly makes it to many of our events to take awesome pictures for us.

Please visit the updated website for the complete schedule, rules, calculator, and other details. Feel free to post questions here!

After "Sport" you'll be dumped straight into Unlimited since you don't have an FA20 under the hood though

Was wondering where the old website went when I recently tried to use the calculator. Love the rebrand, looking forward to the new season. And no more conflicts with the soccer schedule haha.

strat61caster 01-05-2018 08:42 PM

I want to pick up a set of Firestone's and run my STX car in Stock class

:burnrubber:

If only I had the money for more track days

Haha, that was an unrelated issue with the DNS configuration. Both new and old domains point to the same (new) site now.

Looking forward to hopefully doing a track day or two this year!

Hey guys, I’m new to the forums and thinking about joining this challenge this year! How does it work? Just sign up for the track day and show up? Or maybe more info will be available later?

Welcome! Yep, you register for the event and on the day of you fill out some forms to determine which class you'll be in. At the end of the day your lap time will be collected. There's more information regarding rules and other things on the site. We also have a Facebook group. If you have any questions you can ask us there as well!

Yep, what he said. And +1 on the Facebook group suggestion, since we're much more active over there!

Thanks so much, looking forward to it!

One month to get your cars ready guys. What do you left to do? My brz is getting the Ace Specific Delicious Tune , SPC Camber Bolts, Perrin Oil Cooler, Ace 123mm Clubsport Crank Pulley, Winmax W5 Brake Pads, and GTradial SX2 Tires.

treedodger 01-24-2018 06:57 PM

Looking forward to it! I'm new to the track (two track days), and I'll be running the stock class.

My goals are to have fun and become more proficient driver, not absolute best track times. I'll be running a mostly stock setup, with camber bolts, track pads and a Mishimoto oil cooler.

Currently running Mich PSS on stock wheels, but considering running GT Radial SX2 on stock wheels. How do they compare?

Do most 86's run both days or only Sat?

This season will all be only single days. Some of the guys run the whole weekend if the organizer has the weekend booked. Michelin PSS are great for the street but don't hold up to track use well especially over the length of a session. They start to get a bit greasy as the heat builds and tend to start chunking when you over drive them.

If you're only doing a few track days a year and have MPSS you'll be fine. But if you're looking to do more and want dedicated track tires the SX2s are a great and affordable option not to mention the contingency program. They last a long time & are a great tire to learn to track on despite having a bit less grip than your typical 200TW track tires. Perfect for anybody who's new to track days.

Thanks for coming out to Round 1 of the 2018 86DRIVE Challenge, presented by GT Radial, at Thunderhill Raceway! Despite the bone-chilling cold weather, we had a very good showing, kicking off the start of an exciting new season!

It seems like street class is where the action is this year, so look forward to some intense battles here! It was very close this round, so it'll be very interesting to see how this plays out. Congrats to the winners of each class!

Of course, thanks to our sponsors for making all of this possible: GT Radial USA, Winmax USA, Elite Performance, The Racers Line, Bluemoon Performance, Inc., Verus Engineering, and Scott Grasso Photography.

The next event is on March 17, at Thunderhill West, so remember to register with Speed SF Track Events!

1 week until round 2! I've been watching everyone's videos of Thunderhill West and can't wait! Seems like a tight technical track made for the 86s

I'm thinking about taking the dive and trying out my first track day at Laguna Seca. I'm running a tomei uel catless and invidia n1s. Will this be over the 90dB limit?

No way in hell lol. N1 doesn't pass Laguna by itself let alone with headers. If you have your OEM catback still just swap it back on.

mr_squirrel 03-10-2018 07:11 PM

Haha thanks for the info. Good thing I kept them.

Laguna Seca is the reason I have two exhaust setups.

mr_squirrel 03-11-2018 03:05 PM

What do you do about the gaskets? Do you have to replace them everytime you swap?

I will be driving down for the event on 4/28 from the land where the men with beards wear beanies, flannel, and skinny jeans year round(Oregon).

Any recommendations on where to not stay and what to expect on track? I will be driving the car down full of tools, extra parts, and my track wheels loaded in the back.

I am assuming grabbing a hotel in Willows will not be a big deal and I won't find all my windows busted out and my stuff gone in the morning.

I am going to also assume that it will be busier on track then I am used to. Last day I went to up here had 11 cars in my run group, 38 total, and we ended up going to open lapping at the end. Will be signing up for low intermediate.

Is there fuel onsite at Thunderhill? I am concerned with the 5 20min sessions.

There is fuel on site (though more expensive then your normal gas station so just prepared). There will likely be 20-25 cars per group which can feel a but crowded on the 2 mile track.

And I hope the hotels are fine since I'm staying there on Friday lol

Common places that people stay at are Motel 6, Super 8, Baymont Inn, Best Western, and Holiday Inn. Stay away from the Studio 6 (Motel 6 extended stay). Generally, it's been ok to leave stuff in the car. Put a blanket/tarp over any items that are visible if you're worried about that. As with anywhere else, keep any electronics with you (laptop, timer, go pro, etc). I've only heard of one theft, and that was a set of unsecured(?) wheels in an open trailer or truck bed.

When at the track, look for the GTRadial canopies and come say hi!

spike021 03-12-2018 05:30 PM

I'll be doing an HPDE on April 27th at Thunderhill with Hooked on Driving! So I think I'll stick around for the 86challenge that's on the 28th.

Only thing is I probably will only spectate for that one because just the initial buy-in plus HPDE has been kinda pricey so I don't know that I can afford a track day immediately after, haha.

Maybe I can do a ride-along or two if anyone's up for it.

Clipdat 03-12-2018 07:17 PM

Kudos to you for actually jumping in and doing it.

Instead of doing what I did which is making your car basically track ready and then not tracking.

Better to be ready at a moments notice. Never know when you'll be driving down the road and find yourself on turn 1 of Laguna Seca all of a sudden. :bellyroll:

Clipdat 03-12-2018 07:31 PM

Yeah, let me tell you, having a full "track stiffness" suspension setup on the car feels just great driving around bumpy city streets.

Woman gif chosen on purpose, as it makes me feel like a frail old lady.
