Welding an Exhaust Cutout

I've been wanting to install an exhaust cutout to control how loud my car can be. I've run into a problem where my HKS front pipe is 60mm or 2.36in in diameter and the exhaust cutout diameter of the pipe comes in at either 2.25in or 2.5in. Could an exhaust shop be able to weld the cutout to my front pipe? Or would it be a better idea just to sell and get a 2.5in front pipe? Thanks

If a muffler shop can't weld 2.25" or 2.5" to your 60mm front pipe, they don't deserve your business.

Any muffler shop would have reducer adapters to make it work.

A little different, but... I ran one of these back in the day. I had a lever under the drivers seat. It was like being able to install and remove exhaust silencers while driving.

Won't a cutout be super loud when open because it bypasses the exhaust completely?

My current exhaust setup is quite tame right now, so the reason I want to do a cutout is to make more noise. I would have otherwise thought of going the route you've taken.

It will definitely be super loud, but you can adjust how open the butterfly valve will be. The valve doesn't have to be fully opened or closed.

So, where is the exhaust fumes that are being "cut out" gonna go ...... ??

Under your car ....?? ....... :eyebulge:

I think that may be illegal if not unwise.....:iono:

Besides, I predict it would sound terrible ....... if it were "closed" it would sound like an exhaust leak ........ if it were open it would sound like and old Ford that the muffler had fallen off of.

humfrz - ain't no fun .......:D

Cutouts are illegal in most states. As is any modified exhaust. Do you have an exhaust on your car, because any exhaust louder than stock is illegal in Washington state. To top it off, there is legal precedent in Washington that determination is at officer discretion. There's no such thing as a 50 state legal exhaust, regardless of what the box says.

Fun fact, there are cars driving all around you with them that don't sound like an exhaust leak. It's 80 year old tech. People run them all the time, and you've never noticed.

OP, there are electronic ones that can be opened from the cab. You can also add exhaust to run the cutout anywhere you want. Most muscle car guys run a turndown after the cutout. Lastly, an exhaust shop should have no problem making it fit.

25 years? You're approaching the cap. Do your 30 and get out, like I did. I'd wager that we're in the same age bracket.

I was just saying not to beat the kid up. You can do them right, and you can do them poorly. There's a right way to run a cutout, but pointing out the legality of an exhaust mod seems moot considering almost all exhaust mods are illegal in most states. (Despite what the box says)

Fun story, in 2008ish I was pulled over for my exhaust on my 1st gen Rx7 track car. The officer was actually yelling at me because of how loud my car was, until I directed him to subsection 3 of RCW 46.37.390 that exempts cars over 25 years old from enforcement. You can literally run straight pipes on anything over 25 years old (in WA) and not get a ticket. He said, "Well, if you want attention, this is the car to get it in." Ummm, thanks?... But, I digress.

Well, first off, help me determine what your age is, so as I can attempt to relate.

So, how old are you ..??

Well, OK, allow me to rephrase that.

You mentioned that "I'd wager that we're in the same age bracket."

So, I'll be 75 next month ........ are we in the same age bracket .....??
