Noise when clutch depressed - Mornings

[FONT=Arial Black][SIZE=3]Hi Guys,

Well, it could be the throw out bearing. Then again could be something as simple as a lose heat shield.

Is it only when you reach close to the end of the clutch press that you feel/hear sheering?

LarryBA2017 12-07-2017 04:23 AM

Hi Juzzotec, so it makes the noise as soon as i press the clutch in and then gets slightly louder the further down i press......

LarryBA2017 12-07-2017 04:24 AM

Thanks for your input Mr.ac

You might need to post a video but I also think it may be the throw out bearing.

Diagnosing your clutch
1. Turn on the ignition, make sure that the handbrake is on and put the car into neutral.
2. With the engine on but without pushing down the accelerator or the clutch pedal listen out for a noise which sounds like a low growl. If you don’t hear anything then continue on to the next step. If you do hear a growling noise then you probably have a problem with the transmission on your clutch. If you do not know how to fix this yourself then you should take your vehicle into a garage and let them know exactly when you hear the noise.
3. Don’t put the car into gear but push down the clutch pedal partway and listen out for any noises it makes. If you don’t hear anything, again proceed to the next step. If you hear a high-pitched squeaking as you press the pedal then you know that you have a problem with your clutch. This sort of noise is usually associated with problems with the clutch release or throw-out bearings.
4. Press the clutch pedal all the way down. Again, listen out for any unusual sounds coming from the car. If it starts to make a squealing noise then it is most likely that you have an issue with the pilot bearing or the bushing.

@Juzzotec, thanks so much for your help!.....i will take it in and ask them to check exactly what youve suggested.

@LarryBA2017 No worries, good luck :)

Yep, sounds like release bearing.
Get it seen to quickly because you'll be stranded if it disintegrates (which is what it does).

Assuming your car's out of warranty, you should get a price for the release bearing at Subaru before buying from Toyota. The prices can differ enormously, and it's not predictable. Can be up to 50% different or more for the identical part. If you get any grief from Subaru that they need a VIN number, then let me know and I'll get a price from Subaru here.

I replaced my release bearing about a year ago, and it was R585 from Toyota and R508 from Subaru then. Don't know how much for labour. My workshop labour is sponsored so it cost me niks, but it was about two hours to remove and replace the gearbox, say R1500

The TOB is 40 from Subaru and 17 from Toyota.

Interesting that you've also got such dramatic differences in prices on the other side of the world.

Makes one wonder how corrupt the parts business is because it's the identical part. Here in South Africa, Subaru is normally cheaper, but not always. The bottom line is that with the 86 we're blessed to have a choice of two channels. :)

Most brands only have a single channel via their dealer, and that's that...

I've priced other stuff that was dramatically cheaper with Subaru. Definitely worth comparing before buying any parts for our cars. It is nice to have options for sure.

If you can take a video of the noise it might help figure out what it is. In my experience it does sound like the TOB which at first only made noise when cold when it went for me. Your car is still very new so I would take it to the dealership and show them the video. Hopefully it's something that doesn't require the trans to come out.

Good luck buddy, let us know what the issue ended up being.
