Slow Canadian 2JZ BRZ build!
Hey guys, quick intro about me.
I bought my BRZ brand new back in 2014. I started off by wanting a good looking car, new and with warranty as a daily. I had come from a couple R32 GTR's and S Chassis (Still a huge Nissan fan boy and always will be). In between the first 2-3 years the car made little progress on to whether or not I wanted to keep it so it was kept in the garage as I bought other S chassis haha! Anyways I'm making this thread to document this life mistake haha. Here's my Instagram for some pictures as I feel like I will be very lazy to upload pictures or update this thread. This is likely to just be a little online note pad for everyone to see and myself to regret later. I thought about selling the car at this point more than wanting to build it. I'm a tech at Infiniti and all I have kept up with is maintenance and fluids every time year I did drive it. Fast forward to 2017 Spring/Summer. I have switched up the exterior for a complete authentic Varis wide body with the optional carbon pieces and a Voltex 1800MM Type 7 Swan wing and as well as an Aimgain duck bill rear trunk wing. I had sold my previous Rocket Bunny kit and Meisters. I'm now rolling on 18x10.5 +15 square Rays Volk TE37SL in double pressed black and wrapped with 265/35R18 Advan AD08R square. I have also switched the Recaro SPG's for Recaro TSG's in black. Sold the STI Brembos and got Project Mu NC800 (I think it was) front and rear pads. After some serious thought, I figure I'll give it a swing and swap a 2JZ in it. It's always been in the back of my head since I first heard about it. Now 2017 October I have committed to making this project real. A very good friend of mine has a completely built 3.1 2JZ and it revs like a Honda (9300RPM!!) that he was willing to sell at a fraction of what he spent since it hasn't really been used since finished. (1500KM maybe on the set up?) I wish I had the complete parts list but I'll write down what I remember and what he remembers before digging up receipts and such. 3.1 2JZ VVT-I Head - Custom high lift cams up to 9500 RPM - Supertech valves - BC Springs - BC titanium retainers - Five angle port and polish to match intake manifold and turbo manifold - Supertech valve guides - Supertech valve seals - Titan adjustable cam gear - Solid lifter conversion Block - CP high compression pistons 9.0:1 - Manley H beams - Manley Rods - 625 aged caps - Polished and knife edged crankshaft - rehoned cylinders (stock size to rev higher) - MVP motrsports main cap griddle - Clevite, main, rod, and thrust bearings - ARP aged main studs - ARP aged headstuds - Front sump oil pan with modified oil pick up - OEM Toyota seals all around - OEM timing belt - ATI Damper Accesories - Powerhouse racing lightweight 4PC pulley kit. - Power house Racing 12AN breather kit - High output 260A alternator - Power house racing ported oil pump - OEM water pump - Power house racing modified water neck - Modified valve covers - LS coil pack coversion - Flex-A-Lite Electric pull type dual fan kit - AEM meth kit Cold Side - Titan Motorsports intake manifold - Fuel injector clinic fuel rail - Injector Dynamic 2000CC injectors - Ported throttle body to match 102mm Manifold - Ported lower runners to match head (intake side) - ETS 4.5" Intercooler Hot Side - Borg Warner EFR 9180 - Ceramic coated exhaust housing - DOC Race custom 38mm tubing twin scroll manifold with high temp black coating (FullRace only makes 50MM/25MM which was too small or too big for this size turbo) - Tial MVR 44MM Wastegate x2 - Wastegate down pipes custom to clear motor - Turbo smart designed for EFR (50% of blow off air recirculated back to turbo to keep spinning between shifts) - Power house racing turbo blanket - Heat wrapped everything - Full AN lines everything - Turbo drain kit Management - Haltech Elite - Haltec long flying loom - Racepak IQ3 cluster - Electronic boost solenoid - 4Bar GM MAP sensor Transmission - R154 rebuilt with Marlin Crawler parts - RPS Billet twin plate carbon clutch - New OEM Toyota 2JZ bell housing Pretty much what my friend remembered. 2016 was the first year of seven years this car was finally complete and finished in terms of having a motor set up. It came out of his S14 and I believe its been through 3 or 4 motor set ups including this one. We had a baseline tune on the car last year and I believe it made 600 whp, 560 ft lb of torque at 12 PSI on pump 94 gas and not tuned with vvti and up to 7000 RPM. It made 400 ft lb of torque at 3800~4000 RPM. and the 560 ft lb (full boost) at 4500 RPM. It makes crazy low end torque for sure. I'm looking to hit close to the same on low boost with vvti and the full 9300. Maybe around 600-650 whp and 600 ft lbs would be sweet and a high boost setting for fun! Now December of 2017 and sort of a to do list Sold my TE37SL and ordered a BNIB set of 18x10.5+15 OG TE37's in the OG bronze!!! Had to make the switch and take a hit on the money but I think it'll be worth it. I also ordered a set of TE37's for my 17 4Runner TRD Off Road because I think that'd be a pretty bad ass set up once its lifted and all for a daily. Now lets get to the to do list... - I still have to figure out a rear end to use on this build and a more cost effective way (hopefully). I'm hearing some guys run stock pumpkins with hardware on the internals and they are running high HP turbo LS. I might give that a go and run 1000HP DSS Axles and drive shaft. - Fuel system, I'm leaning towards a fuel cell with the trunk floor cut out and tucked in there. Bonus and a lot of it is to have my fuel cap door molded into the Varis quarter so its flush. - Full FIA approved roll cage (weld in), A Pillar back with door bars. - Varis Kamikaze pieces, mostly everything in the front end. I find the rear end rather ugly haha - MPH Carbon roof - Possibly MPH rear carbon trunk as it really proved to be a strong ass trunk compared to OEM or anything else in the market - Paint. A full respray and I have decided a color already. - Varis Ver1 vented CF hood - New suspension all around, arms, coilovers, etc - Custom exhaust for the JZ. 3.5" all the way through probably to an Apexi N1 Muffler - Brembo GT BBK - Recaro TSG/RSG ASM Edition - Lots of M6 ASM hardware for misc parts of the kit (Last thing since its $30 per bolt/washer  ) This is a huge list and a huge chunk of change to burn for this kind of car. I'm really looking to finish this and actually get it out to the track as that has been the plan for this car prior to the Varis and JZ. This is a long term build and I'm sorry if I can't always update it with new parts and progress as I work Monday to Saturday. Plus being a mechanic I really hate to do this kind of crap on my off time. It really killed the hobby haha! Anyways. I wil try and post photo up here of how it looked before and how its going now. A lot of photos now are on my instagram (@goob.y) if any of you guys want to take a look at this piece of junk I'm hyping up for myself. If you read this far, hopefully it means you have some faith in me completing this project and not parting it out and selling it in the future LOL. |
Being absolutely useless when it comes to all things under the hood, I'm truly jealous of you mechanics that are able to work on your cars and save so much money in the process. Not to mention you probably can source things you need fairly easily, like that built 2jz. Followed you on IG. Good luck!

Damn, sorry guys for no updates or pictures yet. Been so busy with work and life and haven't really even had a chance to get any time to even look at the car. Also in the middle of moving places!
As of June 23 2018. My goal right now for this summer is to get this JZ in, hopefully I can get some fab work for the intercooler done if I got the funds. I would really like to start the car up this year. As of now I'm still waiting for my friend to ship me my engine mounts with my OG Bronze TE37's with other misc items. I also kind of cut into this cars build money by buying an OME 3" lift for my 2017 4Runner TRD Off Road, 34" Duratracs and of course Large PCD TE37's in Diamond Dark Gunmetal. With the weather pretty nice I like to try and go out to the trails as much as I can so that also cuts into the time working on the car itself. Recently I had just sold my Stance SS coilovers. Just going to sit on stocks so its easier to roll and tow if I need to. Hoping to upgrade to Ohlin's some time. I do plan on pulling the stock motor out soon so I'm a bit more motivated to sell it and get it out my life and it will also cover my cost of a fuel cell and hopefully a new engine harness for the 2JZ. Once I spend a bit more time to take photos I will upload I promise. I will definitely take pictures of the process and what I did during the swap. Moneys tight now since work is slow as shit and I'm making no hours (I'm a Automotive Technician). Anyways, was bored and didn't want you guys to think I gave up or died LOL. |
'Slow Canadian 2JZ BRZ build!' - possibly going to get slower now that the holy weed has been legalised!

Originally I was waiting for my engine mounts to get started on it. Turns out I procrastinated for probably two months before I figured I should get my donor motor out the S14 and atleast bring it home. So I moved my car from my girlfriends place and to my new place. Got the engine home and now I could start picking away at this. Hard to be motivated to do it since I fix cars for a living buuuut I’m starting now and will slowly pick away at this. I don’t have a clear game plan yet of how I’m going to run the cars electronics yet. As of now, I will not have a heater core, wipers, OEM gas tank, so long story short I’m just keeping my power windows and lights. At first I wanted to do all lexan glass minus the windshield but I figured I’ll be street driving this car time to time and it gets toasty so the power windows are staying.
I realistically want to have this motor in and running before winter and hopefully driving by the end of next fall. I got a 3 week Japan trip in April so that cuts into my “f you money”. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...114fdf50de.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...e66a4b774.jpeghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...a3254a37ea.jpg Plus this year I spent most my again “f you money” on my 4Runner. You could see some my friends being bad influences. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...b5f43ea14a.jpg https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...d0f4a7545d.jpg I do try and go out with my 4Runner as much as I can as well and I would rather do that than work on my car.. LOL. Anyways time to get some of the cob webs off this “build” thread. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
Slow Canadian 2JZ BRZ build!

Attempted to do a dry test fit to see how it sits. Looks like I got to relocate or move the clutch master somewhere somehow as my AN fitting on the fuel rail hits it. Should have the dash and such out this coming week as I have more time now since I’m in school for another 4 weeks and I’m usually off at 3PM. On topic so far it looks like everything will fit and lines up great minus the clutch master since its in my way right now. Looks tight on the front of the engine so I’m curious to see how that’ll fit and how I’ll build an air shroud around them to keep the air flowing going through the FMIC & Rad since I know the JZ likes to run a bit hot: Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
I had pretty much got the engine to sit inside the car. Turns out I still have to do a little work in the trans tunnel to level out the engine. Getting really close to having it how I want it. After this I will be pulling the engine out again and shaving the bay and prepping it for paint for next spring. I guess until then there won’t be much for new parts I think since the 4Runner is lacking some armor [emoji854]

Love what you are doing. Why was the rb v2 set up so short lived before you sunk into this madness of a build :D ?
I think you just inspired me to throw some te37's on my Tacoma when it comes in. That 4 runner is sex. |

Thanks! To be honest I never planned on parting with the Rb as I loved the Meisters and the look. Someone hit and ran my front bumper, they literally drove on top my front end lol! So during the time it was getting repaired a good friend’s Frs got written off and he had the kit BNIB (Minus the bumpers) for a hell of a deal I couldn’t pass up. Since getting into the kit I knew a turbo kit wouldn’t be enough, so a bolt on 2jz should make decent power.. then another good friend said hey. Might as well buy my set up for like 30% of what he spent.. so here I am way over my head haha! I gotta say some parts I regret as I barely got to drive this car and I can’t make the time and money to put it together fast but thats okay. Yes! 16” te37x’s look sooooo good on a Tacoma!! You should do it [emoji106] Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

This week is looking like double digits the whole week so I’m going to try and take advantage of it to get as much done as possible and with finals this week, it is kind if hard! Hopefully fire this thing up before this year ends [emoji24] I had a little bit of time today after class. I pulled the engine back out. I drilled and cut the strut tower bar mount off the fire wall and eventually will do the ones on the strut towers themselves. Going to start removing the OEM fuel lines, fuel tank and filler neck this week. I’m deciding if I want to sand down this engine bay and have it painted to match my exterior. Not much thought on it yet but cleaning up the bay while everything is out seems like a good idea? I still got to take out that heater core but my passenger door is right against the wall (Didn’t think about removing the dash bar, whoops!). So hopefully I’ll get a hand in removing the door itself some time. Personally I don’t think I’m doing toooooo bad for having absolutely no help. Some parts are definitely tricky though! Hopefully get some big progress and updates this week for you guys!! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
That poor poor Tsuki no usagi. You are all thats left to carry on the legend.
I know that feeling all to well lol. 4 years and probably 4 weeks of that i've driven my car. But the drought it almost over! Just gotta slap in some straight cut gears and its time to shred! Hope i get to see your car one day! I'm a Calgary local for the next year. Your car is going to be a monster when done. I'm 100% sold on a te37 taco. Quote:

Sorry for the lack of updates, I was in the middle of leaving my last job of 5 years and now working at a Toyota. So finally settled in now. I have decided to pull the motor back out and put it aside. I think next year I will be getting the front end stitch welded and have the cage done as well and THEN maybe I’ll have the engine bay painted as well as the chassis and inside. As for the kit I will probably come to that afterwards when I get a few more pieces from the optional Kamikaze Varis stuff.
So with the car on pause I won’t have much more updates really. At the new job I am actually make more money than my last so hopefully I can get some more parts rolling and get this project moving. That being said I did pick up this one SPG so I can move this car around later next year. I also plan on ordering a 5th TE and some sort of hitch mount spare tire carrier for the 4Runner as well to “complete” the “look”. Oh and one of my good friends @Apexapexapex (instagram) just got his car rolling.. so hopefully I find out soon if I can run stock pumpkin with insides hahah. Sorry this is so short of updates LOL, unfortunately I am not baller enough to keep it rolling [emoji23] https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...e8c3c33dbe.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...d3dc6cd14f.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...8b2fefcca9.jpg Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
