IRP shifter issue

I could just be my bad luck but it can't hurt to check yours.

I bought one of these used and upon receiving it I noticed the shift lever was really loose on the longitudinal pivot(that allows the shifter to move left to right).

I took it apart, cleaned it all up and put it back together again. That when i noticed that despite tightening down the lock nut on the longitudinal bolt it was still easy to loosen up. Since there is nothing "locking" the bolt down it's free to back out, after use I'm sure it would loosen up again.

What I found is that the thread for the lock nut was not machined far enough, so it wasn't actually holding anything tight (like the bolt from backing out). A picture is worth a thousand words.

It's not like the bolt would fall out since, at some point it would back up against the lock nut, but if your shifter feels sloppy now you know why.

Hope you have a lifetime warranty on that perfect example of a manufacturer defect.

Send the picture to them. I am sure they will be able to replace it.

I can't tell if this is serious or in jest.

They don't owe me anything as I bought it used. It's a easy fix regardless, but as stated above a clear manufacturing mistake.

I reckon you should still send them an email with the picture, to see what they can do for you. Maybe send a replacement bolt or something along those lines.

I wouldn't expect them to do anything but I sent an email on the basis of them upping their quality control.

The rest of it looks nicely machined. I'm a bit disappointed that they chose to modify an off the shelf bolt(which looks like it was done on a manual lathe) rather than make one to spec. I guess that's why CAE shifters are $900.

I'm sure it will be all good once I fix the bolt.

For some reason, people have that perception that if it is expensive it must be well made...in actual fact CAE (and I am not taking anyone's side here really) is using inferior quality stuff...and charges double. IRP has teflon bushing and proper bearings (CAE is aluminium on aluminium and plastic washers)...so you make the call which one is really worth its money and which one isn't! They both good in their own right...but I think CAE is an overpriced product that uses an inferior quality materials to build.

As a follow up to this post, IRP sent me a new bolt. I didn't ask for anything and they certainly didn't owe me a thing yet still went out of their way to ship me a new bolt. Pretty awesome of them.

how hard was it to install lol? I have been thinking about it and read the DIY but it still seems like a PITA.

That should be standard, but then again not every manufacturer stands by their product. Vmoda fixed my headphones under warranty and all I did was ship it to them. I have the sneaking suspicion Astro would not do the same. No matter because I have since learned that "gaming" headphones are shite compared to ones made for listening to music, yet they cost the same. Regardless, if a company treats you right I'd stick with them. I'm still leery about this particular shifter because it seems like a rattle machine. My car is 2 years old and already has enough rattles that I didn't introduce myself

Seanzky 02-26-2019 02:17 PM

Can I get an update from IRP owners regarding the rattle? I'm in the market for one and I really like the IRP short shifter but not if it rattles. With the "fix" from IRP, is the rattle completely gone?
