Recirculate Dump Tube?

I was wondering how many of the boosted people have a recirculating waste-gate dump tube (how they label it).

I opted for this, but was having second thoughts. I've read it reduces power, I've read it doesn't. The kit maker claims it shouldn't reduce power below 400hp (I trust their expertise), but it also quiets it down, which I like for legal purposes (or pretend legal).

I am just hoping it doesn't take too much from the "I have a sexy ass turbo" sound, haha.

I had a MKIV Supra with an external wastegate that just dumped to atmosphere. It was like a banshee when it opened. It was fun at first, but got old and reduced the sound of my other turbo noises, that I preferred to hear like turbo spool and the HKS SSBOV.

As far as performance, the vented one won't interrupt exhaust flow like the recirculating one, and the dump tube will have better flow when vented to air which may prevent boost creep, but I don't think either issue is worth the sound of the banshee pipe wailing.

Whew, ok. That's what I was hoping. I was thinking all my turbo sounds would be gone, like the BOV and the spooling (don't ask me how, just thought it meant that quiet),

Go recirculated if you have any doubts/concerns whatsoever about it being loud and obnoxious. However obnoxious you think it is, it is 5 times more. It is so fucking loud it is rigoddamn-diculous. Even when I had stock exhaust, I was the loudest MFer on the road.

Thanks man! I wanted a more stock sounding turbo, but I wasn't sure if recirc would reduce the spooling/BoV sounds. Now that I think about it, that was a dumb though, as I don't know how something can reduce the spool sound.

I just didn't understand it going into the turbo purchase, and I haven't found a lot of info on recirculating, or videos. Most videos I search for end up being non-recirc and people showing off their loud ass turbo sound (I wasn't a fan).

I have a open dump wastegate and I wished I went Recirculating, the thing is mad loud when I hit peak boost. Other then that I love the thing and hate it for its obnoxiousness lol.

Thought it was a halo reference but either way its funny

Recirc will have the opposite effect, you will still hear your wastegate surging a bit, but it won't overpower your induction noise.

Amputechture 12-03-2017 10:30 PM

What wastegate are you going to be using? Some are louder than others, Tial stuff is really loud for instance.

TiAL MV-S external wastegate

FWIW I had a recirculated setup and it made 552 whp and 481 wtq at 20 psi, I had no power loss concern and loved the turbo noises (audible because of recirc).

nelsmar 12-05-2017 01:37 PM

I made 485 WHP (or around there, with the clutch slipping, never got a final number since i wore it down past the rivets) @ 16-17PSI 11:1 CR with a recirculated wastegate. I haven't had any open gates make more power than my personal setup. Eventually it can give a slight reduction but on a 3" exhaust its not an issue for most peoples power levels. I am building an even bigger block that is bored out and I have no desire to change my setup.

Thanks all! That is exactly the kind of info I was looking for. /whew glad I didn't cancel the recirc.
