Hello,
~78,000km on 2013 frs and TOB finally squealed at me yesterday. Looking at getting the whole clutch replaced. Found good deal online for a used (20K) OEM 2016 clutch.

Question: Is the throwout bearing the same on the 2016 as the 2013? Did toyota address this problem in later model years or will I just be replacing a faulty part with another of the same faulty part that will eventually melt.

Other option is spend X3 the amount on a brand new exedy stage 1. Thoughts?

The 16 bearing is covered by the TSB so it is the same as the earlier ones. Need to get the 17 up one for it to be the new part. They are not expensive though.

They revised the TOB in 2017 and there is a TSB stating you should use the 2017 TOB on 2013-2016. Here is the new TOB part number:
SU003-07349

I am at 84k miles and just put this new TOB on my FR-S a few weekends ago.

Does the BRZ/FR-S have a snout cover kit like the Impreza?

I was wondering if the BRZ transmission had the same problem as all legacy 5speed Subaru transmissions I have ever used.

Use this on the 2006, 2003, 1992, 1999, and 1998 Imprezas I owned and never had an issue afterwards.

Similar or just a ToB re-design?

Just a new TOB. Not even sure it is so much a redesign as much as a change in the bearing lub that they used.

I've been searching all the mechanical forum sections for a general consensus on the best throwout bearings for our cars with no luck. Glad I decided to check here in general before I asked in drivetrain. Thank you for sharing this Ermax! I was actually under the assumption (from digging) that aftermarket TOBs were actually better for the 86s. Which may have been the case until this 2017 redesign you've mentioned? Either way, thank you. I'm used to the OEM TOB being the strongest choice in my GST, and was about to concede that I should replace the FR-S one with an aftermarket clutch Mfg TOB. This has somewhat changed my mind back to OEM.

If any of the other long time 86 owners stumble upon this thread can you all confirm and/or share your thoughts and experiences with the OEM vs. aftermarket throwout bearings?

There is virtually no information on here about the aftermarket TOBs. Unfortunately the 2017 TOB update is so new we also have no real info on how long they will last either. Either way you are probably better off than with the old part number bearing so if going OEM make sure you get the new one.

The TL70 has exactly the same issue but I haven't found a kit for it. The quill is replaceable so there's that. I have a spare sitting on my coffee table. I'm ready to have it turned down so I can fit a custom sleeve and continue to use stock bearings.

My TOB has started to get pretty loud until it gets warm just recently. I'm about 88k miles now in my '14 FRS.

Bob at Drift Office in Washington has a unique fix he encourages. He has GT86 quill cerakoted by Performance Coatings. His claim is that he has not had any return yet, but seems too early to know for sure. But cerakote is a tough coating product, so my plan is to do this when I finally have to pull the trigger and go in to have this fixed. Nice to find that the '17 TOB is the part I need when putting in a new one. Being this is TOB related, has anyone put in the Verus clutch fork in? If you fix the TOB this way, seems like you wouldn't need it, but just curious if anyone has any feedback about it.

I'll probably put a new clutch in as well, even though I don't need it, the mileage is high enough I'd be silly not to swap out to a new one. But clutches are a different topic to discuss in a different post. Appreciate the info in this forum, really helpful when you're stuck scratching your head about something on these cars.

I hope this helps some folks, it's definitely my plan when I have to get this work done. Which feels like it may be sooner than later if the squealing of my TOB keeps increasing.

I've found and bought a sleeve kit since that last post but I'm intrigued by the cerakote! Would much rather use a stock TOB than risk introducing other issues with the non-standard one included with my kit.

Just waiting for a reason to drop my trans again to inspect. Clutch release mechanism has been smooth ever since I went to a molybdenum-type lubricant. TOB is still good.
