TPMS question
 

I have a 2017 BRZ. I am about to buy a second set of wheels with winter rubber. I am thinking of getting them without TPMS. I just want to make sure of a couple of things:

1. The light blinks upon startup and then goes solid, right? I'm not looking at a blinking light for three months.

2. Once I put my stock wheels with sensors back on, the light should go off and all will be back to normal. Yes?

1) yes, but it blinks after you've traveled about 20 miles as a "warning". it does this every time you drive the car.

This is right but I will add that I only travel over 20 miles on weekends, and only sometimes. After the light comes on, it often comes immediately and stays on for a few days after that trip.

You learn to ignore it.

Basically it blinks for a few seconds after you start the car, stays solid, then blinks again after about 20 miles then stays solid.

It repeats every time you restart the car.

It doesn't blink or even appear to be on if you put a 3/4"square of black tape over it ;)

Thanks. I think I'll just forego the TPMS. Seems like a pain for wheels that are only on for three months.

Half the time mine doesn't even come on when I have my summer set (with no tpms) on.

Since TPMS is on every car moving forward, you can consider investing in a reset tool if you have 2 sets of wheels you constantly swap between.

Or invest in this with family/friends and it is good almost forever. You just program the TPMS numbers off the sensor and reprogram your ECU.

Mine comes on about 20 miles after putting the snows (no tpms) on and go off about 20 miles after putting the summers back on.
For the first day or so I catch the light and think "Oh oh... oh ya" then when it goes off in the spring I think "something doesn't look right on my dash" for a day or two. In between I don't eve notice it.

But how do I get the codes from my stock sensors to reprogram when switching back to my stock wheels after the winter? Pay someone to remove the tires to take a peek at them? Or is there another way?

Keep one thing in mind, here in NY the car will not pass the safety inspection if the tpms sensors are not functioning properly. I have to put my summer wheels on when I go for the inspection then change them back again when I get home. Repair shops also will not put wheels on the car if there aren't sensors installed so I have to do it myself at home. When I got my winter tires mounted I went to three shops before I got one that would even do it, the first two wouldn't do it because it was obvious they were for my car because I had them in the back. The third did it because I went home and put the wheels and tires in my old Outback and brought them in to get it done, that car is an '06 so is before tpms was required.
