Looking to buy!
Looking to purchase a older FRS - have there been any issues to look out for on this boxer engine/transmission?
and can anyone point me to where I can buy a painted OEM wing for the FRS - do the BRZ/86 will they fit? Thanks! |

Forums, because typing in the question you're asking on Google would have been too difficult.

None of those were from Toyota but seemed to be offbrand to look like the OEM style but not OEM.
I googled for 20 minutes and wasn't really sure as I don't know much about the FRS. I saw you could buy the Toyota 86 wing unpainted from Toyota now. Will this fit on the FRS as it never came with a wing - unless I'm wrong. Is there someplace I can purchase it painted or do I need to take it to a shop? Thanks! |

I've had my entire transmission swapped out under warranty for 5th gear grinding CEL for ignition coils |

Most of the problems have been caused by people messen with them ...... namely, forced induction, or tracking the hell out of them. If you can find one that hasn't been unmercifully tracked or force fed and it shifts OK ........ it should be a good one. humfrz |

"have there been any issues to look out for on this boxer engine/transmission?"
No real problems there, it's with the overall package..the car. These things are extremely addictive...similar to the current Opiate problem in the USA. If you purchase, may require later, detox and rehab. |
test drive a brand new one and make sure you test drive any used one as you should be able to discern most issues that way. if ya wanna completely avoid the teething issues (and get a few creature comforts like padded knee rest) go for 14+

Get the car's service history, see if the throw out bearing has been changed as that's one of the few common issues I see. It's a cheap part but labor can get expensive if you're over the warranty mileage (gonna have to deal with mine soon). I wouldn't even consider that a MAJOR issue, but it's a common one on older models. Check for signs of mods, of course.
Other than that, you don't have to expect more than regular fluid changes, brakes, and tires. |
Oil leaks is pretty much the most common thing you will run into in terms of engine problems. Makes for a smelly car as the oil burns off onto the exhaust headers when you're idling.

I had a throwout bearing go out in my car but Toyota replaced it under warranty and didn't say anything about my supercharger
