rear quarter damage while parked - options?

Hello fellow 86ers!
Long-time lurker here.

While my car was parked over the weekend, a white prius backed into the rear quarter panel and dented it. Just a few days after I waxed it too!

I cleaned up the area with some quick detailer and a microfiber cloth, which revealed that the original paint (on the panel) is still in tact with a couple small clearcoat scratches.

I already spoke with insurance, and am giving the car to my dealerships body-shop to do the repairs next week.
I was wondering if it is possible to have this fixed without destroying and repainting over the original paint?

I assume nothing will be as good as the original factory paint, and bondo+repaint will always be asking for trouble in the future. But since this is so close to the edge of the panel, I don't know if PDR would be an option. Thoughts?

This damage is well beyond PDR. It's paint & panel shop time for sure.

If you are talking about the durability of the Subaru paint on this car, then I would have to disagree. Pretty much anything would be better than the original paint on these cars, at least on the 13's. That is the only thing I have a big gripe about.

Looks like they might be able to salvage the rear bumper. Worse case scenario is they "might" have to cut out your 1/4 panel and weld in a new one, then repaint the rear bumper, 1/4 panel then blending into the door and re-clearing the whole driver side.

That's a shame ......:(

However, a good body shop can make it look like it never happened .....;)

This is not a "have to" thing. If the other driver's insurance is paying for this, and they are paying the deductible (which they should be), why do you care if it costs more or takes more work to fix? I would be demanding a new factory panel welded in and that they don't blend the paint, but continue it as far as is needed. They mess your car up and now it is their responsibility to make you whole again, not cut corners with bondo or PDR.

That is correct. I am 0% at fault and the insurance company will cover the cost of rental and the repair.

I don’t know much about body shops in my area so I took it to my dealerships preferred body shop.

I have no idea if they will be welding in a new panel for this damage. I simply reported it with them and they took pictures for my insurance company.
I will speak to them before leaving my car and ask what my options are.
I’m sure they will be happy to bill the full cost for the more expensive repair anyway

I think the total amount of carbon that went into building that prius is less than that which went into making my BRZ. Priuses are reliable, though, so they should last provided people don't lease

I was speaking about the drivers not the car. How does leasing make them less reliable or not last?

People who lease swap out their car for a new one every few years which negates the fuel savings of a prius over a lifetime of ownership, not to mention all the carbon that went into making their new appliance that gets them from here to there and back again

But somebody else buys that car instead of a new one. It is a wash. The only way it would be a greater impact is if they threw the car away at the end of lease. Besides people do it just as often with these.
