17x9 Tire question

What are the pros and cons of running 225, 235, and 245? And sidewall?
I have 17x9 +42 wheels on the way.

Also I plan on lowering the car. Not slamming it but I want to rid of some wheel gap. Might even go springs.

Car is a daily driver so I like to keep it pretty pratical and simple.

Thank you for your time!

Well on a 9" wheel I can tell you right now you can't run a 225 without stretching the hell out of it.Even then don't think a 225 would fit. Similar story with most 235 Tires. I would not run anything smaller then a 245 on a 9" wheel.

G_Ride 10-17-2017 01:44 PM

Go a minimum of 245, unless you want stretched tires. 245/40/17 is very close to the diameter of 215/45/17.

It honestly depends on what tire you run. Some run a lot wider than others. A 225 tire with a 45 sidewall will fit and have some stretch. Recommend tire size for a 17x9 is 235-265.

Icecreamtruk 10-17-2017 03:10 PM

Greatly dependant on tire and sidewall height as Trust86 stated. For example, a 245/40R17 Hankook RS4 is flat (no stretch, no bulge) on a 17x9 wheel, but a MPSS in the exact same dimensions has a very small stretch to it. 235/40 will look more or less the same as 225/45 in terms of stretch (there is some, still acceptable).

I would personnaly go between 235 and 245, but not higher than 255 and lower than 225. With 45 profile for 225 and 40 for everything else.

am in the same boat. planning on going with Continental ExtremeContact Sport in 255/40.

I ran these the set before what I am not. Good over all daily driving tire. Good enough grip for most situations. Handles water well. Be careful as the temps outside dip down around 40f anything under that they can be a bit greasy till you get them warm.

I have 255 RS3s and love how flat and square the sidewall and shoulders look. But as other posters have mentioned, each tire will fit slightly differently.

I've just been through the same exercise and finished up with 245 40's as I was sold on the Michelin PS4 and they only make them in 245 and not 255.

The PS4 has ever so slight stretch to the sidewall but not much but I'm more than happy and very impressed with these tyres (tires ).

I've ran 255~235 on a 9" wide wheel. I'm currently on my 4th set of 235 wide tires, IIRC. They're only slightly stretched. Works perfectly fine.

This is very tire dependent. Some run wider then others. What tires are you running on your 9"

Leonardo 10-18-2017 02:13 PM

I have 245's that measure 225. I also have had 225 that measure 245. Totally what tire you run.

I ran 3 sets of 245/40/17 MPSS. Great all around tire. I can also say the A/S3 is a good choice.

RS-3 V1, RSR, and now RSRR. I suppose both these brands run a bit wide.

Yep they do thats why I was curious. Thanks!

Reamer 10-19-2017 09:54 AM

I ran MPSS 245/40/17 on 17x8 wheels and they fit perfect. I wouldn't go anywhere below 245 on 9" wheels unless a specific tire is well known for running wide.

It really depends on the tire. These are 235/45/17 Federal FZ201s on 17x9 57CRs. They run really large and measure out to almost a 250.

I have 17x9s with mpss 245/40/r17s. Tire fit the rims well, but I did need spacers up front to prevent rubbing on the suspension. Love the setup, noticeably better grip.

What rims & suspension are you running?

I pick up my MPSS 245/40/17 on Saturday on the Rota Titan 17/9 E42 and hope I don't need my 5mm spacers? Guess I find out soon enough

PS4 's are currently available in 18, 19 or 20" here in the states

That ended up being a waste of time, Costco would not install the tires as I would have needed my spacer to clear the front strut. They did refund my purchase in full

sachu 10-24-2017 06:43 PM

Trying to decide on the Continental extreme contact sports.

which would work better on a 17x9 wheel?

245/40 or 255/40?

245. Don't see a point in running 255 unless you're trying to maximize grip in competition.

Clipdat 10-24-2017 07:50 PM

That's bs because I ran 17x9 +42 et up front with 245/40/17 for several years without any rubbing.

Maybe you already have negative camber up front via camber bolts though, that would cause the tire to be closer to the spring perch.

Michelin run wider than some tires. I know the AS3+ was almost an inch wider than the Pirelli P Zero AS tires my son just put on his 17 x 9 Apex rims. Both tires were 245/40R17. He isn't rubbing either even lowered on RCE Yellows and with -.8 chamber in front.

Here's how cheap 255/40 riken raptor tires fit.

On the other hand, Bridgetone RE71R run thin, I have 235/45's on my 17x8 wheels.

I am lowered on swift R spings I will hve to check the front camber and I am also on 17x9+42.

Discount tire is matching the Costco price so I will know soon enough
