2016 Toyota 86 GTS Street/Track Build

Hi all. After a very long time, I can finally call myself a Toyota 86 owner!! Owned it for 4 days now and already racked up over 500km!! Absolutely love her. Here are a few pics of her bone stock. Have quite a few plans for her.

Aim of the vehicle- this is my daily driver. Take it for a drive on the back roads every fortnight or so. Would love to get into track days and do 4-5 a year. As car will be under warranty for two more years, any forced induction will have to wait until then. Function will come before form. Won't be the prettiest thing out there but everything added will serve a purpose. My end vision would see my 86 with around 320whp. I think 320 is right on the edge of the power meeting the capabilities of the chassis. Turbo or supercharged? Depends what day you ask me!!

Been researching this car on these forums since the day it came out and years before I would ever lay my hands on one. For the first couple of years I was set on the sprintex supercharger. Loved the fact it has heaps of low end torque. Never thought about turbos as thought they would cause too many issues. Fast forward a few years, I was really loving Verus Motorsport aero parts and I was following their shop car and saw they had a turbo kit by a company called full race. At first, I confused them for Full Blown. After doing some research into Full Race as well as watching Speed Academy's tour of their facilities on Youtube, I saw they made some real awesome products. Then I had to decide ok what kit do I want but I had nowhere near the knowledge to make such a decision. Here in Australia, Garrett is pretty much the go to turbo but I had heard a bit of Borg Warner. After researching the EFR series turbos I realised ok, no matter what kit I get, I need a Borg Warner EFR turbo. Full Race where the only ones making manifolds with twin scroll. Yes here in Australia there are some EFR series kits but all with single. Was I was like ok mad, Full race it is. After learning more about turbos and understanding how to read compression maps and how to make your own calculations, I determined that for what I wanted at the time (roughly 300whp) and really responsive, I would go for the EFR6758. Yes the 7163 spooled only 500RPM later but I knew I would never reach the power numbers where the 7163 was real beneficial over the 6758. In about September, I was pretty much set on buying the kit that month. Had already contacted custom brokers for importing the kit and had everything sorted ready to go.

Then I bought my car. Had two years warranty left and I didn't want to go FI and waste warranty so decided not to buy the kit. I have continued doing my research and I have kept going back and forth with turbo or supercharger. Do I want the Sprintex for awesome daily drivability? The Harrop for a supercharger with the potential to meet my power needs? Or go the Full Race and having all the flexibility in the world for not much more. Then I got the bright idea of why not twin charging using the sprintex for awesome low end torque and the full race EFR7163 for top end. Sounded perfect until I did a bit more reasearch into the sprintex system and saw the issues it had with higher levels of boost. So back to square one.

I have heard so many tuners hear in Aus say go supercharger if you want to track and daily drive. Instant throttle response and with the harrop kit, can get real good power. But I keep falling for the full race. If I go just turbo, will go for the EFR6758 as it will spend 90% of its life under 5,000RPM. Very rarely do I boot it hard on the street (too afraid to attract attention, especially in my car) and only gun it on the track which isn't all that often. Think the better bottom end and awesome mid range will make me happier than loosing a tad up top. Heart says turbo, head says supercharger. What to do :iono:

This won't be happening for a very long time. At least two year before it goes forced induction. I intend to install whatever I go with first on low boost to get use to the power and not worry about building motor, clutch, fuel system. Once clutch needs replacing, will go hard and build motor, clutch, gearbox and fuel system. 350-400whp is end game. My motto is it is better to do things right and to overkill the supporting mods rather than risk and always worry. Although that is a long way away, I have many things to keep myself (and hopefully you guys) entertained with this build. Can't wait to get this started!!

Purchased some goodies from @ft86speedfactory. David was a legend. Helped me with all my queries. Ordered on Friday night and received them on Monday morning which is insane!! Best part of it all, laffy taffy, ft86speedfactory air freshener and key ring!!

Quality of all the products is ridiculous. From the header to the lug nuts and raceseng shifter and lockout, all car porn. Although I am worried the Rays nuts won't fit Enkei RPF1 17x9 +35 due the the fat lip.

Also got around to installing my raceseng reverse lockout and rondure shift knob. Man the craftsmanship on this is nuts. Couldn't believe the weight of the shift knob. I can tell you it made a world of difference. Originally the shifts were a bit notchy but now very smooth. Highly recommend it.

Installation was quite straight forward although I stuffed it up big time with the lockout cable dropping. Had it in reverse and was going well. Then when I went to put the raceseng lockout and locking pin, though it went through the cable. Put it back in neutral and there was no resistance when pulling up the lockout.

Full panicked but thank god I managed to get a thin allen key in and pull it up. Note to anyone else doing it. Once you have it installed, before putting it out of reverse, pull it up to make sure the pin is in correctly.

Light Goodies!!

Also today arrived some lighting accessories from led86.com.au. Purchased some licence plate lights with housing, valenti front fog lights and auto revitalisation rear fog/reverse light. If you like any of these stuff you can find it on their website; they have plenty of lighting accessories.

Managed to install the licence plate lights today and man do they make a world of difference. Pictures don't do them justice. Will aim to install the reverse light and my tom's red rear lights tomorrow. If all goes well, will try and install the front fog lights. Pics below.

Tom's Tail Lights & Auto Revatilisation Fog/Reverse Light

Worked on my car on Thursday and Friday night and managed to install my Tom's red tail lights and Auto Revitalisation fog lights.

Install was fairly straight forward for the fog light. Just getting the central clip off the stock fog light was a real pain. Enough of a gap between the stock muffler and bumper valance to remove and install the new fog light. No soldering involved to tail lights as it came with these clips (included a pic as hard to explain). Ended up breaking the clip on the fog light itself and not on the bumper thankfully.

One thing I would like to figure out is to turn the fog light into a fourth brake light and stay as a rear fog but without the 3 flashes as I find that annoying. Need to some research to figure that out

Tom's lights was a real simple task as was the relay. Tail lights were just 4 8mm bolts each side and for the relay had to get a small flat head screwdriver to pop the release clip up. Enjoy the photos!!

Tomei 60s and cobrasport hi flow cat install

Today I installed my Tomei 60s cat back and Cobrasport hi flow front pipe. It is quite loud at the moment but man do I love the sound. I am hoping it will quieten down a bit once it carbonises on the inside. Still on stock headers and over pipe. Will be installing my ft86speedfactory catted header next week by most likely will be removing the hi flow cat due it being loud already. Only did light revs as don't want to piss the neighbours off!!

I will be recording it when I got for a drive and upload once that is done

Ended up removing the hi flow cat as it was a bit too loud for my liking. I know it would have quiten down a bit as I used it but was a bit much. Always loud loud loud.

New set up is all stock exhaust with a Tomei 60s cat back. Much happier now. Can be civilised but when I go WOT still has the beautiful sound. Also installed my ft86speedfactory exhaust cover. Took 30min to install. I bend the cover by hand to get the fitment that I was happy with. Also installed some fog lights (pic with fog light on left is new compared with stock on the right).

My Verus Engineering Front Splitter and race upgrade arrived today at my work!! Can't wait to pick it up tomorrow... that's if I can make it fit in the 86. May have to unpackage it. Already have the Verus engineering aggressive diffuser and some Bilstein B16 but they won't be going on until my Enkei RPF1 17x9 +35 in bronze arrive. Still another 1.5 months until they arrive as they were the last set coming to Australia.

Picked up my Verus Engineering Front splitter with race upgrade. Quality looks top notch. Can't wait to install it along with a few other of their goodies which should come early next week. Too bad I won't be installing them until my wheels arrive along with my suspension diffuser and oil cooler. Only 1.5 months to go!!

Quick question in regards to brakes. My 86 is a daily driver but I do take it on back roads every fortnight and intend on going to about 4-5 track days a year. At the moment and for at least the next year I will be on stock brakes. Am i better of going for a hybrid pad like to Ferodo DS2500 or better of getting a street pad and then a track pad? From what I have researched, the DS2500 is a great hybrid so from my own research, leaning towards that. Other pad I am considering is the DS1.11 as that seems to have good bite when cold but retains performance up to 700 degrees Celsius which is plenty

Also, I am no professional driver. Will be going to my first track day hopefully in the next month or two.

dattran86 10-24-2017 09:16 AM

I run HP+ at autocross and DTC 30 at the track, i do swap them out every event with oem brake pad for street driving. my car is a daily driver

you have a lot of mods already for a person who just getting into high performance driving.

I'd say the aero mods for your car right now is unnecessary as a novice driver, if you're just dipping your toe into HPDE just leave your car stock for a while and just do tires/brake/fluid. go to a lot more track day before you start upgrading the car. it's a lot harder to take full advantage and drive the car to it potentials. you're increasing the limit of the car before your own

Car is booked in for dyno run on Monday to get a baseline. Will then be installing my FT86Speedfactory UEL catted header that night and get it dynoed and tuned on Tuesday (98 Octane). Can't wait to see that torque dip disappear!!

Painting Brake Caliper

Painted by brakes yesterday. Really happy with how they turned out!! This is my walk through. I decided to completely remove the caliper and dismantle it rather than leave it on the car so this step by step process for painting is for removing the caliper as well

Tools required
Socket wrench
12mm socket
14mm socket
17mm socket
Breaker bar
12mm spanner (i used an offset spanner)
Flathead scredriver
Wire brush
Drill wire brush x2
Drill
Brake cleaner
Bag of rags
VHT Flameproof cermanic paint x2
VHT Engine Enamel Burnt Copper x2
VHT Capiler Paint (Clear Gloss) x2
Jack stands
Jack

Step 1
Remove your black terminal from the battery. This is required as when you bleed the brakes with the earth still on the battery, it can throw out a check engine light

Step 2
Jack up your car, place on jack stands and remove wheels

Going to start with front calipers then rear

Step 3
With 14mm socket, undo the two caliper bolts; not the caliper bracket. Just crack it so it is easy to undo once the caliper of off the car.

Step 4
With 12mm socket, crack the banjo bolt at the back of the caliper. Make sure to have some rags close to you as when you crack it, brake fluid will begin to come out. I have seen some people clamp the rubber brake line to stop the fluid flowing through. This made me uncomfortable. I tried using some plastic irrigation piping to put over where the banjo bolt goes but it was too small. So i just got a rag and pulled it through the hole until it was tight. I wrapped it on the spring.

Step 5
Remove one of the caliper bolts as if to do a pad change. At the moment, there is still brake fluid inside the caliper. Get a rag, and place it where the banjo bolt would go. Open the caliper and allow the fluid to come out. I lifted it 4-5 times to ensure most came out.

Step 6
With a braker bar and 17mm socket, crack the caliper bracket and remove caliper from the brake disc. Prior to completely removing it, it's a good idea to get some open ended lug nuts and screw to the disc so once you remove the caliper, the disc stays in place.

http://image.ibb.co/bCB536/IMG_20171026_095137.jpg

Repeat steps 3-6 for the other side and for the rears. The rears is the same process, except the caliper bracket is a 14mm not a 17mm. Also, for the banjo bolt, I had to use a spanner and the socket wrench would hit the spring so couldn't fit it on properly.

Step 7
Now that the caliper is removed, time to dismantle. Process is the same for both front and rears. First remove the two 14mm bolts holding the caliper together.

Step 8
Remove brake pads and the clips. Also remove the two rubber hats as well as the holding pins. It is a good idea to take some photos if it is your first time to remember the orientation of the clips and pads when you put it back together.

Step 9
Now that the caliper has been dismantled, time to get the wire brushes out and begin to clean them up. Aim is to remove as much brake dust as possible to get to the bare metal. Use wire brush and then clean off with brake cleaner. Repeat the process until clean.

Step 10
Now we need to mask off any areas we don't want to paint. This includes your piston, hole for banjo bolts and the two holes for your caliper bracket.

Step 11

Time to paint! First need to apply the ceramic coating. Apply 3 coats; the first two are light coats followed by a third wet coat. As i wanted to get full coverage, I rotated and applied two more coats on the under side. Picture is after one light coat. Don't get worried about getting full coverage on your light coats. The 3rd wet coat will ensure that. Allow 10-15min between coats

http://preview.ibb.co/jGDh0m/IMG_20171026_120023.jpg

Next apply 3 coats of your colour. This is what it looked like after 3 coats of colour. Again, two light coats and a third wet coat.

http://preview.ibb.co/gPKsi6/IMG_20171026_141553.jpg

Now it's time for clear coat. This will give it it's shine and final protection from brake dust. Once again, 3 coats with 10 min between coats.

http://preview.ibb.co/kfD2i6/IMG_20171026_150452.jpg

http://preview.ibb.co/cgp8O6/IMG_20171026_150456.jpg

Step 12
Time to bake. Preheat oven and bake as per can instructions. My caliper paint said at 100 degrees Celcius for an hour. I just used my domestic oven. Make sure to remove any tape that was used to cover up parts on the caliper. We don't want a fire!!

http://image.ibb.co/iwHv36/IMG_20171026_183442.jpg

http://image.ibb.co/c0o2i6/IMG_20171026_183447.jpg

All baked and ready to be installed.

Step 13
Begin to put together your caliper again. Once it is put together, reinstall back on the car and bleed the brakes.

http://image.ibb.co/cQ1SGR/IMG_20171027_091934.jpg

http://image.ibb.co/coS1bR/IMG_20171027_091942.jpg

Step 15
Step back, admire your work and enjoy a cold beer!!

arthur93 10-29-2017 08:30 PM

Dropped my car off at PVS Performance today. Got to say, Tyler there is one very knowledgeable bloke. Down to earth, honest and full of useful info. Spoke to him about turbo vs supercharger and I may have been swayed to go for the Harrop Supercharger. But that will happen in a few years after warranty ends. For anyone in the Sydney area, definitely hit him up.

Very excited to see what results I get. Getting them to install my FT86Speedfactory Catted UEL header and get a 98 Octane tune. Hoping for 130wkw and 200nm and a very flat torque curve. Will be picking it up tomorrow.

Will also be posting some sound clips and dyno graphs with the header as well over the next few days.

arthur93 10-31-2017 07:25 PM

Got the car back and must say, went much better than expected. Measured at the hub, I got 141kw and 208nm. Best thing is the torque curve is as flat as a table. Getting 200nm from 3,000-6700RPM. Will be posting my dyno graph later today.

The header has actually made the car quieter to me when just cruising around town. Not sure if it is because it has a slightly more boxer rumble to it. But man, when you get on it, the heavens open up!!

That sounds great!

However, I don't know if anyone has told you this yet, but your steering wheel seems to be on the wrong side! :eyebulge: You may want to check and see if there is a TSB about that.

Will be going to my first drift event this Friday night!! Can't wait to give it a go. Will definitely be pretty average but hey, got to start somewhere!! Hoping to have a go as it is a free event so it is first in first serve and only the first 40 cars will be drifting.

Will definitely be posting some clips of me spinning out and hopefully some decent drifts.

Ah, I understand now. Just watch out for those redbacks and the 9,000 other venomous creatures you all have down there. :)

Seriously, though, your car sounds great.

Drifting is pretty much understanding throttle control once you break the back end loose. It just takes a bit of practice. Good luck!

I see you have been watching too my National Geographic and Discovery channel :bellyroll:

Thanks man. I love how it has a split personality. Cruising there is the faintest of boxer rumble and giving it WOT is just music to the ears. Love the @FT-86 SpeedFactory header as well. Down low it has the boxer sound and at about 4k the smoothens out and the Tomei takes over.

Yeah pretty pumped for drifting this Friday. On a wet skidpan so should be easier to get the tail out.

Dyno results 98 Octane

Pictures of my dyno. Very happy with the results.

Please bear in mind mine was measured at the hubs using the dynapack dyno so reads about 8-10% higher than those on dyno's measured at the wheels

I have done a few things this week in preparation for my first drift event this Friday. On Monday I installed my fire extinguisher and bought myself a helmet. Went the vintage look and absolutely love it. Bell Indy 500 1974 for those who want to know.

Verus Motorsports Art!!

Ended up also receiving some Verus Engineering parts on Tuesday. The quality of this is stuff is just second to none. Especially the LCAs I could hang them up as art. In love that much. Also, a reason I went for the Verus Engineering LCA is they recently created a bracket for the auto level light sensor, so for those who do care about that, this is a good option. Also a bit shout out the @VeloxEric for his help. Been in contact with him over the past year with numerous stuff in getting things organised and he has been an absolute legend. Anyone who is considering buying stuff from aero parts to suspension goodies hit him up. He will take care of you.

Ferodo DS2500 Pads

Also ended up purchasing some DS2500 pads for my car at track days. Will be using these only for track days until I burn through my stock pads and then use them as both street and track pad.

I was going to use the DS2500 for daily driving and back road runs and DS1.11 for track, but after speaking to Chris at V-Sport in Sydney, he advised me for going with the DS2500. This will very much be specific to each individual. Considering my car is n/a, track isn't hard on brakes and I won't be using a semi slick (will be using Michelin Pilot Sport 4), I was advised that the DS2500 will be up to the task. Again, this is all dependent on individual circumstances.

If anyone in Sydney is looking at big brake kits or brake info and products, definitely hit up V-Sport. Very knowledgeable people and definitely willing to give you some honest advise. For those outside of sydney, contact Comp Friction; especially if you are interested in AP Racing kits as they are the distributor for Australia.

Just another video of my new exhaust set up. This time from the outside. Driving around town boxer sounds awesome. Once I give it, over 4k it is just intoxicating. I know i keep saying the same stuff but it just sounds too good!!

Went to my first drift event last night. Unfortunately despite getting there an hour early, missed out on getting a run as it was open to the first 40 cars. I was the 44th!!

Still had an absolute blast though. Met up with a fellow 86 owner and went for a passenger ride and even that itself was an awesome experience. Have already booked and paid for my first official drift day on the 18th November. Can't wait!!

Also will be going to my first trackday on the 16th December. Hoping by then to have the car track prepped by then. Need to install my suspension, wait for my wheels and tyres to arrive and install my oil cooler as well.

Will be going to a Dyno day on the 2nd December. Would be interesting to see how the dynapack Dyno compares to the Dyno dynamics. Very interested to see what the variance will be. Hopefully temperature won't be too different so results are comparable

And pics of your velox/verus stuff on the car?
I wonder if @VeloxEric can let me know where/how I could get pricing on stuff for South Africa?

Thank man

Here is a link to the one I got specifically. I think any 1kg should fit in the same area. Only downside (not to me but definitely to others) is that when installed, it blocks access to the 12v. I have seen though other 1kg extinguishers where there is still access. Mine is quite narrow and tall. a more fatter and shorter one should alleviate this issue.

At the moment, none of the stuff is currently installed. have it all ready to go. Reason being now that I have done a few mods, want to learn the car and its behaviours (will be doing this at the drift event and track day that I will be doing in the next month).

I will be installing all of their stuff post my first track day on the 16th. Will be taking time off from then until the end of the year so all of their stuff will be on before Christmas. At the moment I am prioritising my oil cooler, and once my wheels come (late Nov hopefully) suspension and tyres.

And @VeloxEric already beat me to it!! Too good!!

arthur93 11-09-2017 07:22 AM

@86 South Africa @Boomerang Also for the extinguisher kit, requires just two holes to be drilled into the plastic and secured with self taper bolts. It honestly takes 5min to uninstall so can easily retain cup holders for everyday and then install for track days etc
