Oil leak on a 2017 86? *Resolved*

Pulled into my spot at home today and notice a big fat oil stain. Thought maybe someone else parked there, but nope. I was over at my girl's and asked her to check her driveway where I was parked and she saw a few oil stains as well. I noticed the car has been sounding weird the last few days, even revved a few times to see if the exhaust has a small leak, and now the stains pop up. Car only has 16K km on it. What do you guys think? Something loose? Going to toyota tomorrow

Nobody knows.

Check your oil level to be safe before you drive it again.

Yeah for sure. Just brought back lots of bad memories of my last car constantly springing leaks. This better just be a loose oil filter or something.

Or a bad oil filter - or a bad installation of an oil filter - or a bad installation of a drain plug after your last oil change. When was the last time it was changed - at 15000 miles? Was it leaking oil after that? Lots to look at....good luck.

They overfilled it last time and I went back to have them drain it and refill it. The service manager said he gave me a new oil filter no charge. Lost an hour of my time, that's payment enough.

Anyway it was about 1-1.5K ago, so very possible it's one of those things

Well, now, that's too bad ...... :(

Good plan, let the dealership sort it out.

Hopefully it's just an oil filter or drain plug that is leaking.

When i drained my oil on my 86, some of it spilled right in the skidplate, when i got home 100km after i saw there was some oil on my garage floor, i jacked the car and clean the skid plate and then no more problem. They could have done the same thing maybe idk.

StraightOuttaCanadaEh 09-28-2017 06:21 PM

It was a loose drain plug after all! I feel sane now. I hate to be one of those sticklers who bring their car in for every noise and squeak but they were like "we're glad you brought it in". Tightened it, topped up the oil a bit, and I'm on my way.

Not very confidence inspiring though...
Hopefully they didn't screw up the crush washer, might leak again soon if they did.

I'll keep an eye on it for sure. Done with this dealership though. Taking it to the mechanic for oil changes. Would have taken it to him today, but I figure I would have had to pay, while the dealer is free.

This is why the free oil change mailers I got from the dealership went straight into the trash. Overfilling, stripped oil pans, joy riding, door dings, scuffed wheels and bumpers, etc.. It's a new surprise each time.

I have had 12 oil changes done at my dealer since I bought the car and probably another 60 over the cars before that and have never once had any of those things happen.

Only bad experience I've had at dealers are their prices and the classic shady mechanic BS. That's good enough reason for me not to go back to that particular dealer. If I had a good dealer in the area I would probably go, but the three dealers I shopped for my car had horrible sales service, I don't expect much more from their service department.

Nice. Not all dealers are careless but I'm not interested in experimenting to determine if my local one runs a tight ship or not. Plus it takes less time for me to change the oil and recycle the old oil than it does to schedule a trip to the dealer and deal with drop off/pick up logistics. And I know the job was done right. It's just not worth the trouble and the risk for me. To each his own.
