Stoptech 309

Recently replaced my stock brakes with Stoptech 309's and want to leave some impressions. Using my original stock rotor at about 85,000 miles.

First off I'm not sure if I ordered the sport pads or the street pads. Guessing sport pads are for track. My order for StopTech 309.15390 seems to mean I ordered the sport pads. Oops. Came in some good packaging but had no part #'s on it.

Recently installed, I have mixed opinions. They stop good, easy to use. But they don't have bite when cold. And also at low speeds, make some pretty chunky sounds. I'll have to see how they wear in, if the noise will subside any, but this is my main concern. Guess I should have been paying attention and bought the street pads.

At $45-65, these are a pretty good value, but I'm starting to think that the OEM pads might be better suited for using the rest of the stock brake hardware.

I considered these at one point and likely will pass over them again.

When they added the 308 pad they changed the naming a bit. 309 used to be "street performance." Now 308 is "street" and 309 is "sport."

I have the 309s, they have worked great for me. It's definitely important to bed them in, I've seen reports of people having issues with noise and uneven deposits, but I went out with new centric premium rotors, new 309 pads, and did some hard stops and they have not made a peep and work when cold.

@jamal I'll try some hard stops and see if I get an improvement

It sounds like you did get track pads, as they usually have a higher working temperature range to achieve their rated friction value. Our street / track hybrid SPP 3.0 pads, for example, have a 100 - 500°C working temperature range, so from 0 - 100°C, they might only have a μ value of 0.30, but once they reach 100°C and above they'll be in the ~0.37-0.44 range.

Well, the stoptech 309 "sport" pad is still not what I would consider a track pad. It can handle pretty high temps (they list the mot as something like 1400f) and can be used on track but it is not ideal compared to a track specific pad.

Here is the recommended bed-in procedure from stoptech

you have to get those things pretty hot. I could smell them and the pedal started to get a bit soft despite having fresh rbf600 in there. Then once they cooled back down initial bite and feel was awesome.
