Why did you buy your twin?
Hi All Fellow Twin Owners.
I have been reading a lot of the posts of various subjects. I have found a lot of them interesting and informative. There is a lot of knowledge being shared which is always a good thing. There are a couple of particular items that keep coming up that that I find interesting but there is one that keeps rearing its ugly head “The twins are slow”. We all know that speed is a relative term and stating the twins are slow can be proved and disproved based on the yard stick being used. There are lots of reasons to buy a car/van/truck most of them are personal so I decided to ask the question and see what results we get. I have gave 5 categories that are more specific to sports cars. I have not included stuff like mpg and safety ratings as these tend to be secondary in when talking about sports cars. (I know someone will state that sports cars are safer than saloon cars because of the better stopping distances etc. but my focus is why you decided to buy a twin as opposed to another sports car so the point is moot)
There are probably a number of other factors I could have included but decided to keep it simple. So all you fellow twin owners. Why did you buy it? |
After eight years in a Miata, I was looking for a car under $30,000 that was a bit larger (interior room) than the miata, was a coupe (as opposed to a roadster), RWD and fun to drive.

It was cheap.
I needed a car for just me and my laptop. It was cheap. It looks pretty. It was cheap. It was cheap. The cockpit is wonderful. It was cheap. It is different than most cars on the road. It was cheap. Oh and did I mention it was cheap? |
Cuz I was and still is broke ass.

It's the most e36-like newer car. Oh and it was cheap.

After years of driving inexpensive, boring, family haulers I decided I wanted something a little more fun when we shipped our eldest to university.
As luck would have it the FRS was released at the right time and hit all the boxes. Fun, inexpensive, decent performance, looks good, etc. I couldn't be happier with the purchase. |
1) It is FUN
2) It is so CHEAP I do not worry about having FUN in it. 3) I was so tired of the outrageous maintenance on my German sports cars. I guess you might say I like CHEAP THRILLS |
Just search for "cheap sports car" on google images.
|
Because i cant afford LFA or F12 Berlinetta
|
Bought it to have some fun on the track, something that was on my bucket list. I rarely even drive it on the street.
And of course because it was CHEAP |

I travel a pile for work and usually chew up a car in 3 or 4 years so always go as cheap as I can without sacrificing too much fun. In this case I figured 3 years and throw it away and buy a new one. I now plan to just keep this one and fix it as things break. This will be first car in the last 4 I didn't just trade in when things started to wear out. |
It measures 1/2 inch short of 14 feet long, which is the cutoff for a discounted small car rate on the Washington State Ferries.
Significant savings if you have to commute. edit: One of the reasons I don't have a spoiler or front lip. I already knew about the purpose designed chassis and low CG, but when I noticed the length in the stats, I bought mine the next day. And it was cheap. Bonus: direct replacement for my old Alfa GTV2k bar a Civic S and Grand Caravan in between. |
Bunch of cheap skates .......:eyebulge:

For me it started in gran turismo, I downloaded a prototype dlc of this car and I loved to race with it also how it looked. That lead to when my old BMW 3 series was on its way out for me to test drive it and immediately I feel in love. I test drove this car in an auto and I was thoroughly impressed. I also did mountains of research and loved the design fundamentals of the car. I ordered a manual just based off of how well the auto drove, the low center of gravity and lack of body roll was something I really appreciate. I've been so happy with this car. I used to be big in German cars until I got more familiar with Japanese sports cars and this car really cemented that in. I love this car to a point that it is a little unhealthy. I find this car special and treat it as such. Although it is cheap to me it's my Ferrari with a scion badge.

Exceptional value for the goods offered.

I was a year and a half out of college and wanted to buy a new car. Had always driven used cars and wanted something new.
I follow the KISS principle as complicated things break and are hard to fix. This car isn't terribly complicated. Rwd was a must have for me just because. That all got me into the dealership. What sold it was just sitting in the drivers seat for the first time. It just felt right. Every other car looked like... Well a generic interior. Everything was in the right place and easy to reach. Idk, just got emotional over it and couldn't stop thinking about it for a week. Then I went back and bought it. |
It was in my budget.
It was RWD. It has folding back seats. I don't carry many people/ things. Lots of aftermarket options. Looks absolutely stellar looks both FRS/86/ BRZ. And is a simple car I can learn to work on. It was my college graduation gift to myself. |
cheapest fun car that I thought looked good that I felt like buying new. I was sick of fixing used cars and I wanted at least 3 years of stress free driving. I've had a couple of problems so being able to just take it to the dealer and say, "fix it" without worrying about the cost or anything is REALLY REALLY nice. plus those free oil changes were pretty cool to have while they lasted.

1: Couldn't find an FD for a reasonable price.
2: After a decade of racing the Miata's engine was stating to show its age. 3: Stupid state makes it hard as hell to leaglly get a R32 GTR here. 4: Cheap, RWD, Stick, Good MPG. |
I wanted a lightweight, RWD car with more than 2 seats.
Literally no other cars made in the last decade fit that description for under 50k. |
Most fun per gallon.

I'm fat.

I didn't realize you were committed to this thing. Congrats! For the OP, my parents pressured me into buying something with airbags, not many options for non-convertible, RWD, <3,000 lb sports cars on the market at any price point, it's a winner in a lot of ways. I probably would have eventually ended up with an RX-8 if a dealership didn't finally come through after three months of searching for an FR-S with no options added. The RX-8 is probably the closest thing to an 86 built in the last 15 years. |

You must have missed the posts last year where I said the plan was changed. I was given a fourth plant to take care of and it is much closer to home. This dropped my driving from my distant one from 2 or 3 times a week down to 1 or 2 and saved me almost 50K over the last couple of years. I get mileage so it is more than paid for. I have not had to put one penny into it for repairs so am way ahead of the game. I can't stand the 17 front bumper, tail lights, steering wheel and interior so why trade for a new one to have a bunch of stuff I would eventually get used to but hate every minute of doing so. Soooo I decided to keep it until it falls apart or just costs to much to keep going. |

Because they wouldn't give it out for free....
I don't really know precisely why I bought the car, wasn't really looking for a car and not a fan of Subaru boxer motors from past experience. Test drive was okay, but not a 'gotta have the car' experience. I guess I liked the idea of it (affordable sportscar that was a coupe with great looks and handling) and it was something that I could just afford, and I knew I did not want to buy a used one (was my first ever new car purchase.) I guess Chris Harris sold me on this car as well... think it was his first video that pushed me over the edge. So yeah, I guess if it really comes down to something, the first Chris Harris is why I bought the car.... Through the 5 years I've had it so far, it still feels special to drive and really LOVE the little thing...even with its faults. |
many reasons...2+2 seating, handling, looks, simple interior, no steering wheel controls, tach in the middle and most importantly it is a "slow" car begging to be driven fast
|
I was getting sick of my 2007 Yaris, and was really thinking about trying to find a first gen MR2. Realized getting one was just not feasible for me, and I am just not going to buy an STI with that piece of garbage ej subaru gives us, so it was the BRZ, because I really do hate the stock interior.
At this point though I wish I just bought a 2013 FRS and used the money to mod everything, but oh well. And yes, because it is cheap. I cannot tell you how much I wanted to try and get an Alfa 4C, but damn those have 911 level options, nothing in the US even remotely close to the base price. I hope the values of those drop, would be fun having a full carbon fiber tub to stick something ridiculous in. |
