Let's talk about buying tools

I noticed my BRZ has E-torx bolts for the seat rails. I've never had to deal with these in any of my other cars, so I finally got me some E-Torx sockets.

What new tools has your BRz/FRS given you the opportunity of buying?
Also, what are your favorite tools?

Here we go again

Minglor 09-05-2017 11:33 PM

Do you find that your tools last longer at home or the track..?

Clipdat 09-05-2017 11:37 PM

Why do you need to do anything with your seat rails?

None, all the tools I need for my FR-S came in the trunk of the car.

My favorite tool .....see below.

Wait, you claim to have owned German cars and you've never had to deal with Torx?

Yeah, goodbye.

Yeah, goodbye.

You should learn the difference between Torx and E-Torx.

Yes, I understand that many here do not own tools.
One day, you'll start to need them, if you keep your car to a high mileage.

Adjustable wrenches are great for stripping fasteners. They should almost never be used.

I don't.

If there is a tool I don't have, I will try to buy it.
I hate like not having tools to do something.

If I ever need to remove the seat, now I can.

Ya since the E just means eternal and they are the exact same bolts used primarily in European cars since they came out. There is not a hope in hell you did not come across Torx bolts in all the German cars you claimed to own.

You sound like me with the tool-buying habit - last count I had about 17 ratchets. As far as the seat rails go, one day my buddy and I were trying to take the driver's seat out of my BRZ so we could make the clutch adjustment easier and I didn't notice that they were Torx---somehow we were able to get 2 screws out using hex sockets and then ran into trouble with the third one--then we noticed that it was a Torx (I have both the Int and Ext types). We're both in our seventies and don't see stuff that easily:bonk: You should join the garage journal forum--when you get there go down to the general tool discussion and have at it.

I can post about 10,000 other threads with similar info about external Torx usage on BMW cars, for starters.

I feel like 85% of the bolts in my e36's were god damned torx. Hate those things

Slammillionaire 09-06-2017 12:09 PM

I would honestly go as far to say that if you don't own any torx sockets, you have probably never worked on your own german car.

Don't tell Ludwig that. He may question the origin of his name...

My opinion on OP is changing from 'misinformed yet extremely arrogant 16 year old' to 'outright troll' very quickly.

Oh, OK, thanks for the heads up.

I do have a backup tool, in case my adjustable wrench strips the fastener.

I've had torx sockets for my BMW bike over a decade.
Pretty unavoidable.

Well if he is from MD then you both probably fought for the north so you should have common experiences.

Think it is coincidence that high school starts back up and Ludicrouswig stops posting during the day?

He's definitely just practicing some new insults against the white padded walls of his room. When he gets bored he probably plays with all the cars he's "driven" on that carpet racetrack.
