Anyone use a dash cam?
Not sure if this is the correct section for this, but I'm wondering if anyone is using a dash cam. I'm thinking about pickin one up. Found one on Amazon that seems descent for like 40 bucks, review on amazon seemed okay but I'd be willing to spend a bit more for something better quality. The only features I'm really looking for is auto record when the car turns on. Audio and GPS would be a nice feature but wouldn't be a deal breaker. I'd really like one that can break video into intervals without having gaps in between, which I know a lot of the cheap ones do. Anyone using one?

808 keychain camera is your best bet. I use one in my car, works very well. They're like, $3-4 a piece.

Yeah it's hard to be those 808's - almost the same quality as a gopro but at a tiny fraction of the cost!

First time hear about this, thanks!
Do you have to turn it on every time you enter the car? I'm also assuming it runs off battery power. |
Those are cool, my only problem is that it doesn't seem to have auto record. I don't want to have to press record everytime I get in the car, this is something I kinda wanna hard wire, hide, and forget about it until the time comes that I need it. Seems like I'd have to press record everytime using the 808. It is cool tho, might get one just for fun.
Found a DIY online on how to make it auto-record, but that only runs off 5v, not 12v. |
Get a regulator to step the voltage down. Problem solved.

Ive actually done a bit of research and I came across this:
http://www.chinavasion.com/china/who...VR_Dual_Camera Now it's Chinese so I'm kinda worried, but after watching a really good youtube review of it I think I might give it a shot, comes out to like 90 bucks shipped which isn't bad. Its a bit more then the 808, but it has mounting brackets, its designed for this purpose, it has GPS, auto start and stop, wouldn't have to mod it myself, and it has both foreword and rear facing cameras. Heres the link to the review if anyones interested. http://www.uobd2.com/wholesale/wide-...-dvr-2928.html I bought 2 of these on Ebay for 50 bucks each, 1 has been in my Santa Fe for months - total idiot proof. Records when ignition is on, loops over data files. The other one will go in the FRS shortly, especially with the 12V plug in the glovebox (!) I run a dashcam
it was a cheap ass one but does the job I'll take a pic when I'm done work |
I have one. Moved over from my previous car. It's a 2-3 year old chinese product, but still works. It records 1080p @30fps onto a card. There is an interval between files, but it's like 1/2 a second. I'm sure you can get something like that a lot cheaper these days.
Alternatively - use your smartphone for that. You can usually set those up so that it starts autorecording once the car-cradle triggers 'vehicle' mode. |
Otoz has one:

I run a Blackvue DR400G in my other car and love it. Parking mode is awesome and the picture quality, even at night, is great.
