I'm typically out of town and in a rental M-F....one week I got stuck with a Mitsubishi Mirage- the FRS felt like a Ferrari as I drove home from the airport :D

I have been DD'ing my twin (MT) for the last couple weeks. Today I have to pick up chicken supplies at the feed store, so I'm in my 4x4 Dodge (AT). Did the usual waving my hand around looking for a stick, and plop my left leg against the fire wall looking for a clutch.

Drove a rental Toyota Corolla. Scared the living hell out of me the first time I tried to push it in a turn. Between the numb steering and the body roll, it felt like absolute crap.

I was canyon driving in an AT rental once that might have had paddle shifters... Can't remember... I tried to heel-toe downshift out of habit and I'm pretty sure the car was just as confused as I was.

That's what I refer to as phantom clutch syndrome.

I took a rental Corolla down the Tail of the Dragon a couple of years back. It was interesting to say the least.
On a related note, never buy a used rental car!

Phantom clutch isn't toooo bad as long as you don't hit the bigger brake pedal by accident.

Been there, done that.

It's funny, I've done it both in the truck and our AT Civic. I seem to remember I'm in an AT when I accelerate, it's when I'm coming to a stop I want to downshift and the Phantom shifter and clutch come into play.

I had a rental 4 door Corolla when I was in Seattle last. Seemed like a good car for going from here to there, tons of room, but boring as hell. The paddle shifters were a major joke.
