First new car!

Hey guys,

Someone rear ended me a couple weeks back and my old car was totalled.
I recently graduated, and found a swanky new job as a software QA Engineer so I thought maybe it's time to get the car of my dreams.

Say hello to my first new new car ever!!!

WELCOME to the forum, there, Azyael and CONGRATULATIONS on your new car......

You sure did pick a winner!

Now, read the owners manual (the WHOLE thing), put only premium gas in it, follow the maintenance schedule and ...... stay far back from parking stops ..... ;)

And for the love of God, leave it stock.

Congrats!

I'm somewhat in the same boat. First new car for me too was my 2017 BRZ that I picked up a couple of weeks ago.

The question is... hard or soft engine run in??? After much reading I went for hard break-in after I spoke to a mate who has been national sales manager of BMW, amongst others.

What does the manual say for break in?
This shouldn't be a question.
No doubt the national sales manager for BMW would be the most informed on breaking in Subaru engines.

An engine is an engine for the most part. You need to get the piston rings to seat properly to the cylinder wall. It creates more power and less blow-by.

Most engines are taken to red-line at the factory anyway. There's a theory that manuals only quote a break in period for legal reasons. Telling customers to push an engine is not the safest thing to do.

My feeling about it was that If I babied the engine and the piston rings didn't seat as well as they could, then that would never change. If broke something with a hard break-in, well there was probably a fault there waiting to happen anyway, and that's what a warranty is for.

Every break-in myth set up in one post. Nice.

The break in process is set by the engineers to let the engine reach it's best. Saying it is from lawyers so people won't drive the car hard is silly. Breaking in is not babying the car it is prepping it and setting the parts in where they belong.
Glad that you are so much better qualified to determine what should be done than the people that built the car.

Hey I'm just letting you know why I did what I did. There's debate on both sides. I was torn, and I can definitely see the logic from either opinion. I'd never advise anyone which way is more beneficial. I'm no mechanical engineer. I'm not on these forums to argue. Only discuss.

That is why I made sure the counterpoint was made.

I didn't intend my initial post to sound that way. I was more interested which way OP was going to go with it.
