RIP Irwindale Speedway

Closing in January and being torn down to make way for a shopping mall. Sad!

What's a Shopping Mall?

The only stores I have been to in the past 2 years:

Target (rare)
Publix (may switch to WholeFoods once Amazon starts delivering)
GameStop (once because it is next to Target)

*29, btw.

I'm not sad that it's being torn down, I'm kind of confused as to why any developer would place a shopping mall (or any mixed use commercial development) in that area of Irwindale.

It's full of gravel pits (17+ of them) and is a Superfund site as identified by the US EPA. But undeveloped land is a premium in Southern California, so I guess there's no other choice...

Most of the malls around here are so deserted that you could run autox meets in their parking lots without disturbing anyone. They are closing a racetrack to build a mall?

More like the race track didn't have enough money, they sold it, and the new owners are building a multi-use commercial property on top of the old site.

Agreed-- what an odd place for a potential 'mall.'

Dudes, they been saying Irwindale Speed way has been "closing" for the last 15 years.

I remember when the first Hot Import Nights opend up and it was "sad" cause it was the first and last time it was supposed to be there.

As far as a shopping mall? Lol yeah right. That place is surrounded by manufacturing warehouses.

If they keep saying it enough eventually it may be true!

Update, Aug. 11 at 8:48 a.m. ET: Irwindale’s Vice President of Communications, Doug Stokes, responded to Jalopnik with some comments about what a great run it had. He also included the lovely photo you see underneath his comments with the email. What a cool dude.
Yeah, the other shoe, after 5 years, has dropped, and we’ve been given a firm (01.31.18) vacate date.
I’ve been told that the Outlet Mall plan has been scotched; but really don’t know what the “official” plans are for the property … an easy (and in my case uneducated) guess is something of an industrial nature.
