White n' Yellow.
 

I've always loved the look of track cars. One of my favorite parts (for some reason) is the white/yellow letters on the tires. "Continental," "Michelin," or even "Pirrelli."

I want to eventually have that look-- but i don't want to use an oil paint pen and color it in by hand. Those racing tires have it painted on there, seemingly with a stencil. What can one do to get a similar look? Make a stencil and find some kind of oil-based paint you can spray? How do Michelin, Continental, ect do it for their racing tires?

Buy crappy tires like BFG Radial TAs or something - quite a few have the white writing. I kinda like it as well. :w00t:

LoL, i don't want to have crappy tires with the cool lettering. I like those Yokohama's lettering, though. I wouldn't mind having something like that. I'd likely do a Dunlop spray on some Star Specs if i could find out if there is a special oil-spray paint that wont just flake right off. I've always loved the look of tires like that.

Can you plasti dip, in white, your wheels?

I've always had a soft spot for proper white letter tires.

So to sum up, no one really knows how to get a long-lasting result like i've described?

Other than buying legit tires... No.

I presume a normal spray-paint w/ stencil job would flake away after a short while. I wonder if there are some kind of oily spray paint which would stick for a while-- and possibly a conditioner/overcoat..

Actually, spray paint may work if you get the right stuff. Spray paint used for plastics is pretty flexible as it's meant for plastic lawn furniture and other things like that which take a beating and should adhere well to the rubber. I would tape over the letters on the tire and then slowly and carefully trace the outlines with a razor blade and then peel away the tape covering the letters. Then spray paint the letters on there.

Just make sure you buy spray paint SPECIFICALLY meant for plastics. Krylon Fusion is my personal favorite and it is capable of adhering to rubber.

THANK YOU! I think this is the closest swing at this so far. I think you're right on about that spray paint. I would also prep the tire by scrubbing it with soap and water-- then maybe wipe it with a solvent or just isopropyl alcohol.

Regarding taping the text, I was thinking-- i may not even spray the existing text. I could make a stencil and just spray over whatever black text is already there. I could take this picture--

--Print it, then trace it onto some plastic and cut it out, thus making my own stencil. Then i could paint it up.

I wasn't so much thinking of just coloring in the existing text. I don't think it would make it look much worse to do it that way. Especially if you're 3 or more feet away. But what do you expect if it's on the tire coming in direct contact with dirt? Question is can the dirt can be cleaned off without marring the paint.
