2017 Dynamic Shift indicator.

I've been playing with the shift indicator in the 2017 Pro.

In the 2012 all it seemed to do was display the shift up ^ beside the gear at about 2,000 rpm. So it was pretty static and it never seemed to tell you to downshift. (Note you have to enable the "Gear display" mode when stopped in the 2012, it isn't on be default.

The 2017 adds a bit more intelligence to it. If you are accelerating slowly, such as following a slow car or van, it gets you into 3rd at 15mph, 4th just past 20 and in to 6th at about 35mph.

However if you squeeze in the power it will not suggest a shift up until much higher.

Also if you are sitting in 6th at anything less than 45mph and floor it, it will suggest a downshift. Actually flooring it in any gear under 3 or 4k it suggests a downshift.

It's fairly pointless and not wise to sit and watch it, but it has the right idea about shifting and new-to-manual drivers could learn a thing or two from it.

I just turned mine on to see what gear I'm currently at and just shift on my own.

on my 2017 BRZ it isn't dynamic. It has one shift point really low in the rev range and then one higher and displays both no matter how I'm driving.

Do you guys get the colour TFT screen or the old 2012 EU spec red LED one?

Shift light and shift indicator are two different things. The big red shift light can be adjusted, however, what's being talked about here is the gear indicator. It tells you what gear you're in, as well as displays an arrow when it's most economical/fuel efficient to shift (at least that's what I've read).

wait how do you turn that on? It'd be nice to see on the display what gear I'm in. lol

Edit: Idk how to turn it on for the 2017 model

I have it enabled on my 17 but it's not dynamic...it's somewhere around 2200 rpm when it flashes pretty much no matter what gear I believe. Occasionally when down shifting and then getting on the gas it will flash right away as well but I don't think it's dynamic. And I'm not talking about the redline light/buzzer. Just the little ^ next to gear indicator.

I'm gathering the USA 2017 is not the same as the EU/UK one.

Do you still have the Red LED Speedo and trip read out? The EU/UK one has colour screen with cool stuff like:

G meter instant
G meter peak (in 2D chart)
Water and oil temp + battery voltage.
Trip with average speed, total time, total distance.
Fuel including miles to go
Messages (includes low fuel, TPMS, faults etc.)
Lap timer / stop watch
Settings page (for rev limiter etc.)
