BRZ split into 3 pieces. Driver in critical condition.

Should have waited to try that in a TS version.

Well at that speed, we know his car is not stock

Stock cars can go 140-150. Not easily but still they can do it.

Final gear ratio determines the maximum speed. Power determines how quickly you can reach that speed. This is assuming that the car's drag coefficient is not unreasonably high to make power the limiting factor for top speed. I think that is a safe assumption for 86/BRZ.

venturaII 08-03-2017 09:43 AM

Are they assuming that speed because of a damaged instrument cluster, or is it based on real data from accident reconstruction? If it's because of a random photo of the cluster, that'd mean the car was going 140+mph while also turning -1000rpms and overheating...

Look like stock wheels and tires to me.

I have no sympathy for someone who drinks and drives. If he dies, he dies.

neat story!

Well that's a life to live. I hope if he survives he learns some sort of lesson from this and seriously considers how much danger he put innocent bystanders in.

KDad2 08-03-2017 10:40 AM

I suspect they either reconstructed the crash or calculated the speed based on the distance between traffic cameras. Regardless... he was on the frontage road speeding and possibly drinking. I think the news report said he will recover. Hopefully a lesson is learned. Like I tell my kids... if you drink you stay where you are at or call Uber if you have to get home. The other lesson is that if you get over 140 in a FRS/BRZ, make sure you have proof and a list of mods! And next time, take it to the track.

A lot of cars these days have data recorders that provide such details. Not sure about the BRZ, but it's a possibility.
