Looking to buy an Frs or 86.

Hey guys I'm looking to buy a used frs or 86 and I was curious to know if there is a year that I should stay away from. I really like these cars. I hear they are fun to drive and not to fast which is what I need cause if I buy a fast cat I will probably habe to sell it again to pay my speeding tickets. But seriously I saw these cars had a hand full of issues but didn't see if they were specific to a certain year.

Yes, stay away from any 2012 and earlier model....2013 and up are good. On a 2013, just make sure it has the updated ECM/firmware. Or just get a 2014 and up if not sure on firmware/ECM.

That sounds more like a personal problem, not a car problem. Buying an FR-S isn't going to be the solution.

indeed, people with lead feet will be wot all day.

@ OP really all years should be ok..sure, some problems have been reported for early models but they were sporadic. a test drive & check under the hood should be evidence enough.

Your safe pick for would be anywhere from 2014 and up.

This, your good just test drive and throughly inspect the car. It's more important how the previous owner treated he car than the specific year.

This ^

Even the early 13s are probably pretty safe by now. They either have had the issues and been repaired or never had anything go wrong in the first place. Any car can have problems though so there is no 100% guarantee with any year.

Mine is a '13
PO reported no issues, just a TSB for the windows.
No CEL so firmware thing is a non-issue
No crickets.

I went 13 and low mileage. Checked the dealer service records for recall completions, and tsb work. Got a steal. Even has some warranty left on it.

Dunno if there are many used 86's yet but if you could afford a used 86 get one. It's closer to new.

Bought my FRS 8 months ago, built 3/13, 40k miles currently, no problems at all so far.

Forget the FRS or the 86, you need to focus on a BRZee or BRZed (location and market dependent as to which version you get).

stevesnj 08-03-2017 09:11 AM

BRZ has softer springs and shock tuned for sensitive people, the FR-S is tuned more sporty.
