Clutch Squeaks when depressed - out of warranty
 

Hi all, I'm out of the warranty period for my brz (2013 MY, purchased in 2012).

Now my clutch squeaks when depressed. What are my options? Has this been covered by Subaru even out of warranty?

It's nothing serious, your clutch fork needs some grease, very easy to do yourself.

Do I just get the grease on the exposed metal? Or do I need to get a grease gun and use the grease nipple I see near the fork?

I put some grease on the exposed metal under the dust boot, but it still makes some noise.

Is it a quick squeak and then stops, or a constant squeal?

It's most likely the throwout bearing. Especially if it sounds like this:

I had mine fixed under warranty, but one of my buddies wasn't as fortunate. He had to pay for it out of pocket, which was the same cost as getting your clutch replaced. Depending on how much mileage you have and how you drive, you might as well get your clutch replaced at the same time since it will already be opened up. Toyota gave him a high price, as expected, so he just got it done at Touge Tuning. Squeak be gone.

I had the same noise and ended up doing a new clutch. When I was in there I had found markings that lead me to believe somebody was in there MULTIPLE times.

If you are doing the transmission pull yourself then a couple hours of time is not bad but if you have to pay someone to do it then you are better off just doing it all.

IIRC, this is a known issue that crops up even if your clutch and throwout bearing are good - basically, something about the grease not being applied properly. If it's the same situation, then it might not be something that calls for a costly replacement.

Hence why I asked the question I asked above.

If the clutch gives a quick squeak when you push in the pedal, and then stops, it is most likely just the fork needing grease.

If it is a constant squeal instead of a squeak, and is prolonged, that would most likely be the throw-out/release bearing.

Important to diagnose properly to avoid unnecessary expenditure.

I had my throw out bearing, pressure plate, and clutch fork all replaced under warranty at 84k on my car after the bearing blew. He gave me the option to do the whole clutch at the same time, but I was told my clutch still had about 55-60% life left, so I opted to not do it at the time. Perhaps I'll regret that moving forward, but to replace a clutch that has almost half it's usable surface material remaining seemed silly, even if it is expensive to get in there labour-wise.
