NorCal 86DRIVE's 5th Annual Gizdich Ranch Pie Run 2017

http://86drive.com/wp-content/upload...7-Flyer-v1.jpg

It’s time for our annual drive down to Gizdich Ranch in Watsonville, CA!
One of our most popular destinations for some delicious apple pie or other fruit pies. You’ll want to eat a slice there and take a whole pie home with you. We’ll meet up in San Jose at noon and take some backroads down to Gizdich Ranch.

Everyone is welcome to join us on this fun little trip.

The plan is to head out for the Ranch at about 12:30PM. Final destination is Gizdich Ranch, 55 Peckham Rd, Watsonville, CA 95076. If you just want to meet us there we’ll be there probably around 1:30-2:00PM.

Saturday, July 22, 2017

Start/Meeting point: Parking lot at Chevy’s Mexican, Almaden Plaza Shopping Center, 5305 Almaden Expy, San Jose, CA 95118
Meeting time: 12:00 PM
Departure: 12:30PM

Sapphireho 07-18-2017 11:14 PM

sounds fun, wife and I may join in.

I think it has been about 20 years since I took my kids there.

Mchilese 07-18-2017 11:49 PM

Sounds cool! Might be able to convince my wife to go. Here's hoping no calamity befalls my car!

Not a whole lot, it's basically an orchard with a barn where they sell the baked pies and fruit, and a small gift/antiques shop. I suppose you could wander the orchard and it might be a nice backdrop for family photos.

but, Gilroy Gardens is not too far away on 152 :

Took my kids there 20+ years ago when they were young. You can pick your own fruit, I think now all they have is strawberries in season to pyo. Kept my kids interested for about 2 minutes.

See you there

Pwolf 07-21-2017 10:51 PM

I'm going to try and get to the meeting spot a bit earlier and get some lunch.

Mchilese 07-22-2017 12:15 AM

Can we get a run-down of the route? I'm just curious what route we're taking. How do I tag someone.. @PMok...? Is that how I do it? I don't know how forums actually work.

I am going to be a little late due to too much drinking last night LOL... and waiting for the wife. Sorry guys, the timetable will be pushed back a little. Anticipated we will not roll out from the Almaden area until 1PM or so. Sorry for the delay.

The route is generally this: south on Almaden, hit some backroads past a reservoir, eventually connect up to Hecker Pass 152 to watsonville.

Lol. Cool. Decent group already here outside. We came in to get something to eat, though. We'll be ready to go.

How does this drive compare to 9?

PMok 07-23-2017 02:26 AM

Thanks to everyone who came out... including a few non-86s that joined us for the trip I think we counted 20 cars total. Apologies again for the delayed start, I realize many of you got there on time and were standing around in the hot sun for a while waiting for stragglers to arrive, and others to get gas, and then people going for coffee runs... sorry to do that to you. Most of our drives start a little later than planned and that's usually OK but this one felt a little too disorganized. I hope it all worked out for you guys and you were able to enjoy the pie and other treats once we got there.

I didn't take many pics today, here is one I got just before we arrived at Gizdich Ranch.

Biggest disappointment had to be the fact that they sold out of the Dutch Apple pie... :mad0260: but I guess that is a good reason to plan another trip out there soon.

Sapphireho 07-23-2017 12:08 PM

Pie run was great. Wife and I had a great time. We had fresh strawberry pie for breakfast this morning, yum.

It's like 95% highway 35 + 5% highway 9, with narrower and worse condition roads. Still worth it for the pie.

Mchilese 07-23-2017 07:25 PM

Looking forward to next year already! That was a seriously good piece of blackberry pie.

Good group to go with, too! Traffic got us split from the group and we made a wrong turn. Luckily Ricky's FRS stood out in our mirror, so we could flip around and catch back up.

See ya at the next meet-up!
