Improving sound (help with exhaust options)

Hi everyone,

I'm looking to improve sound on my FRS, power is nice -but my primary interest is having the car sound more sophisticated and sporty (without drone etc).

Option 1:
UEL header

Option:2
Cat back exhaust:
-HKS Legamax
-Greddy Supreme SP
-Invidia Q300

Suggestions? I've read some say UEL's with stock cat backs bring just the right noise to the car, but I've heard others say it sounds awful. On the cat backs, I like the three listed -but don't know which to pick if I were to go that route.

Thanks!

Header for performance.
Cat-back for sound.

I have recently installed OFH2 UEL headers on an otherwise stock car, and it sounds awesome. Completely silent when cruising, and then a great rumble when under load. Just as it should be, especially if you are driving long distances.

Drove 31 hrs from FL to AZ on stock header and Nameless Axleback after only having driven with the new muffler for 10 miles. Took me about 15 mins on the road to get used to the new sound in cabin and once in a while I'd lower the windows to listen to that beautiful roar.

Considered perrin resonated catback. Plenty of videos on you tube also paired with catless uel

Start with the UEL header and if you want more, then look for a catback. I agree with Skogs, my OFH sounded great with a stock catback. Quiet when cruising with a noticeable but not loud rumble under acceleration. I now have an over pipe and a catted and resonated front pipe along with a Greddy SP Elite axleback. It still sounds great and while quieter than most setups, it's a little too loud for me but still not overly loud.

My setup is in my sig. I love the sound and it's not loud at all.

;) Yups, what he said^^^^^

OP consider the Perrin 2.5 resonated catback. No drone at all. Loud when it needs to be.

I've listened to many youtube videos paired with JDL & FT86Speedfactory UEL catted headers and it roars nicely without being too obnoxiously LOUD.

I look forward to a catted UEL & OFT when my power train warranty expires. :)

I've heard this quite a bit, but have also heard a number of members (couple quoted below) who love stock exhaust with UEL's. Have you heard an 86 with stock exhaust and a UEL?

Based on what you two are saying I'm slightly leaning towards the UEL... How noticeable is the rumble? Is it a rumble more vibration through the chassis similar to motor mounts etc or is it more a change in the exhaust note? How much louder is it? I'm not looking for loud/drone, but I want the increase in sound to be noticeable under load. Do low/high revs make much of a difference?

Thank you again for all of the help!

Speaking from experience, Greddy Supreme SP catback, stock fp, stock header.

I went with catless Gruppe-S Uel, HKS dual resonated front pipe, HKS legamax premium. Its quiet when cruising but a soon as you hit it roars. Not too bassy not too raspy tinny somewhere right in the middle. But plenty loud when you romp on it.
And I like the 5" fill the bumper nicely

This isn't my sound clip but very close to my sound. Only difference is he has a catted front pipe, I have the dual resonated.

There is no added vibration, just a deep boxer rumbleing sound at more than 20% throttle. Volume-wise just a tad louder than the sound tube inside the cabin, probably quite a bit louder than stock outside.

HKS UEL sounds really good too & is design with sound in mind if you do go with HKS legamax.

Quite a few suggestions on headers + Cat backs but I'm only looking to buy one or the other....

Am slightly leaning towards the UEL, but am still undecided...
