Helix Black Side Marker legal?
Just bought the helix black side markers for my brz.
Having a hard enough popping the older orange ones off the car since the small A metal thing to push in seems like I need to use crazy force to get it off but will try again later since I only had a few minutes yesterday. Now that I am thinking about it though, is it even legal? I would just be using the outside casing to be black and using the same amber light already on the car. I am in Michigan by the way? I already have tinted windows a bit too much but has never been a problem. If this is illegal I could see them stopping me though? Thought. |
They have to be amber by law.
Those are 100% illegal. The likely hood of getting pulled over is highly dependent on your local cops though. |
Yah...that's actually a federal thing AFAIK. No doubt some politicians are in the pocket of the amber plastic manufacturing lobby.
I say don't worry about it, just save the OEM ones in the unlikely event you need to pop them back in to get a fix-it ticket signed off. For the last ~10 years I've removed any amber lighting on my cars and never had a problem. I have those same smoked Helix ones, they look sweet  |

The DOT regulation specifies that side markers must "reflect amber", which makes me think that having an amber bulb in a clear/smoked housing wouldn't save you from a potential ticket.
IIRC in Sweden amber lighting is illegal lol, go figure. |

The lens must be amber, not just the bulb. But most police don't care fwiw. |
