Klunks when stopping
 

2013 FRS. At first I thought it was the sway-bar end links groaning since they tend to have a short life-span in the snow-belt. Not that.

Noise is only apparent under braking, and mostly noticeable at slow speeds as soon as the pedal is pushed. Also notice that it does not start immediately if the car is cold. Maybe a mile or two of driving before it rears its head.

Jacked car up looking at all the suspension links front and rear. Wheels spin fine. Not wheel bearing. Can not induce the noise when spinning by hand and having someone apply the brakes. Car stops just fine.

Anyone else heard of this?

Check your struts, they may be blown. When you're braking, it causes your car to nose dive which in turns uses your struts to keep your car up.

You on stock springs/struts?

Stock springs and struts 40,000 miles.

Nothing obvious with the springs or shocks and the car handles as well as ever.

At first I was convinced that it was the sway-bar end links because I know that graunchy- creaking sound so well. But nothing I can see and it is directly related to being on the brake pedal. No brakes, no noise?

I think I might crawl under and have a look at the u-joints. If for no other reason than I am running out of ideas.

Check strut mounts and all bolts tighten to specs

A few years ago, my car was suffering from a similar issue, clunking when going round bends and occasionally when braking but turning left and right a definite clunk!!


This carried on for a few months and I would get passengers to listen out for it so they could help me try and pinpoint the source. My main passenger was my wife and she would look around confirm that she couldn't tell where it was coming from.


One day one of my work colleagues happened to be in the car and again 'clunk', 'clunk' so I get him to look, he goes directly to look under the passenger seat and discovers a large heavy can of hairspray that my wife had stuck under the seat..

Haha I saw the picture before I read what you wrote and thought you were going to recommend hairspray for getting rid of suspension noises

I've had the low speed clunk occasionally. Get it on my motorcycles too.
The brake pads have a bit of front to back tolerance within the caliper blocks.
If I brake backing up or on an uphill stop, next time braking forward the pads will slide from contact with the back of the caliper to contact on the front.
Maybe about 2-3 millimeters, but enough to sound catastrophic. Temperature related too.
