Oil Leak
 

So i posted something about this a few weeks ago, basically the oil galley plug on this car was so tight that when i removed it, not only did it strip threads off the block, but there is also a hairline crack that runs maybe 1 inch down from the top of the port in the threaded area. I took it someplace to have it looked at and he said he would heli-coil the damaged threads, until he found the crack. He suggested that the only way to seal that area and prevent it from leaking is to JB Weld the adapter for the oil temp gauge in there and pray for the best. I am looking for any input as to what you guys think and if you have any other suggestions about how i can repair this and prevent it from leaking for good.

... I wouldn't JB weld anything like that... though the thought would cross my mind...

So then what would you do?

Would it be out of the question to have some sort of reference material like a photo? The thing with in weld is it's awesome but in my personal experience it doesn't play well with heat and the way the block with expand and contract will not be even in the same neighbourhood as how that stuff reacts to heat.

That's a shitty place to have damage. I don't know if it would be more expensive to repair that block half, or to just find a donor engine.

I'm thinking tear down and put in the hands of a talented welder/machinist.

tbh, if you don't want to spend money just JB weld it and see if it leaks over time. just be sure to prep the surface well before using JB weld so it has the best chances of lasting

Yeah that's my thought but I guess if your going to go down that avenue you might as well try jb first just to see how well it holds.

The problem is the crack. No way to decontaminate it well enough without first notching it enough to get some daylight in there. It's all in the surface prep.

JB Weld is my go-to miracle goo. I'm not too proud to admit I've even cut threads into it. Wasn't pretty but it held for the application.

I also use things like welding rod or safety wire as rebar to support the repair in tension.

There's still no way to safely cut threads without disassembling. All sorts of chips and shit will get down in there and hang up in the journals.

I sanded the surface and cleaned off all that gasket maker I had on there, cleaned out the threads real good and applied JB weld to the mating surface and all around the outside. Going to let it sit 24 hours, do an oil change and then start the car, I'll let you know how it turns out...

Good luck! If it leaks across a spot don't be discouraged. You didn't mention if you did a final wipe with brake cleaner or acetone. Degrease is a critical and often overlooked step.

Well the JB weld didnt stop the leak, its still leaking where its cracked, looks like im going to end up taking it someplace to have the crack welded

You can always the old bodge of a greased tampon to stop swarf entering the journals.

A fresh one obviously.
